The Tomasino trade alone proved the GM's competence. All the moves made were pretty good so far this year except maybe the goalie trade but due to injuries we really had no choice and drafting the brother of one of the top prospects was a pretty savvy move.

The Thomas and Tomasino trades both were master-strokes. Now, just to get to the Draft, and see these moves come to fruition!

Coming out of both trades without an 03 is not a home run. The return for Thomas was underwhelming. But, I was referring more to Jumbo than Burke. Mrs. Jumbo MMGM keeps banging the drum for Jumbo. She keeps telling us what a great recruiter he is. I repeat, yet to be seen.

I am not related to Mr MacLeod in any way. Having said that before we nominate JB for executive of the year based on his trades lets do a quick comparison between Niagara and Barrie, both of whom were close in the standings come trade deadline.

JB got Niagara 8 2nds, 2 3rds, 3 4ths and a player who is an 02

Jason Ford - Barrie GM got 7 2nds, 4 3rds, 2 4ths, a 5th, a 6th, an 8th and 3 players (2 that are 02 and one that is 03). After that haul Barrie did not tank but rather moved up the standings and did not have the high end (Thomas & Tomasino) to trade that JB did

Barrie was never going to tank they want to go for it next year they also gave up some decent players to get the players back

In order for the IceDogs to get the return stated (along with the rights to 02 D.Gucciardi) they traded:
(00) Thomas (2nd rd)
(01) Tomasino (1st rd)

For Barrie to get back the return stated they had to trade the following 6 players (and the rights to 2 others):
(01) Ryan Suzuki (2019 NHL 1st rd - 2017 OHL #1 overall pick)
(02) Riley Piercey (2018, 1st rd #16 overall by Barrie Colts)
Matej Pekar (NHL Buf)
Tyler Tucker (NHL St.L)
Jason Willms
Jack York

When you include Paquette, Hunter and Sopa (along with Tomasino and Thomas), the total return the IceDogs received in their selloff was:

02 C. Butler
02 C. Peters (one of the 3rds was flipped for Peters)
02 D. Gucciardi

10 x 2nd

6 x 3rd

4 x 4th

1 x 5th

1 x 6th

1 x 8th

...the total return from those 5 IceDog players was quite impressive. It accomplished exactly what they set out to do - and what everyone wanted them to do - dismantle and rebuild this team through the draft (and trades eventually). Can't really knock the job JB did as a seller.

Hard to get a winning team when you lack the "core" guys from the 2nd & 3rd rounds to go with the 1st rounder you draft & any previous 1st rounder(s) you can acquire from other teams. JB has a least put us in a place to build for the 22-23-24 seasons.

Agree OlDawg. Not including potential trades and signings, the IceDogs now have the draft picks to build a strong core in multiple years similar to what Ottawa has done.

Looking ahead a few years, when the IceDogs key core players are the 19 18 year old in this league, they will have the following high draft picks coming up behind them:

02s
- 2nd rd: C.Butler
- 2nd rd C.Peters
- 3rd rd: David Guicciardi
- 4th rd: J.Uberti
- 5th rd: C.Snow
- 10th rd: T.Tynan
- 1st rd IMPORT: G.Chanton

03s
- 1st rd: I.Enright
- 3rd rd: L.Cato
- 6th rd: J.Rozensweig
- 8th rd: A.Agostinelli
- 1st rd Import: TBA
* there were also a few other impressive 03s at camp last year *

04s
1st rd: TBA
2nd rd: TBA
2nd rd: TBA
3rd rd: TBA

05s
2nd rd: TBA
2nd rd: TBA
3rd rd: TBA
3rd rd: TBA

06s

2nd rd: TBA
2nd rd: TBA

This list is not impressive one bit. The lack of talent is worriesome. The 03's is where it's at because in no way will this team be in a position to go for it in 2 yrs. Hopefully, they can flip Butler and Tynan as 19 yr olds and turn them something into that will help them the following year. I'm not sure with the lack of talent that this isn't a 4 to 5 year rebuild. Hopefully, they don't force things and go for it in a year they don't have the horses like last year.
