This is very disturbing. An agreement was in place for the street naming rights and all the city had to do was accept the cheque. But instead the city changed the details of the agreement and now the city looks bad and we're short 1 million dollars. Guess who pays for this. The taxpayers of St. Catharines. Someone should be terminated at City Hall for this.

First off - BOTH sides are full of B.S. : If you're giving money in exchange for something else, you're making A PURCHASE. *NOT* a donation.

Imagine if everyone told shop owners, I'll "donate" this much money to you, and you "give" me that item in exchange. No taxes!!

Hell, maybe I'll donate 45 hrs/week to my place of work, and they can gift me back a bunch of moey. No income tax!

It's not a donation: The IceDogs were attempting TO PURCHASE the naming rights of a street. The Dogs wanted it permanent, the city said it would be for 20yrs.

There ARE times when you receive something back for a donation. Like donate $100 to some cause, and they give you back a hat or a bookmark or whatever. But nobody is spending the $100 to get the hat or whatever trinket. THat's just a throw-in. This 'donation' was CLEARLY to *buy* the name of the street. It was a purchase, not a donation.

Anyway... if the original agreement was for a permanent name, and the city tried to switch it to 20yrs, then the city is in the wrong. If it was always 20yrs to begin with, then the IceDogs are in the wrong.

Hmph.

Now..

Quote:
It was March 7, 2014, when the Burkes announced publicly they would donate $1 million to the Meridian Centre fundraising campaign during a media event in council chambers.
At the same event, St. Catharines’ then-mayor Brian McMullan announced the name of the road near the arena would be called IceDogs Way in honour of the donation. A sign was unveiled with the Burkes and their family.
So, if there was no mention of the City giving the street name to them before hand, and the Dogs said they'd donate $1M before the city even MENTIONED the street name, then the Dogs should stick to the $1M donation. Of course, it's up to them - they can withdraw it beforehand at any time and look bad in the public's eye.

Now.. if the Dogs were unaware of the street name thing, and said they were going to donate $1M, THEN they heard about the city naming a street after them and thinking it would be permanent, and THEN found out it would only be for 20 years, and THEN refused to donate BECAUSE of that, then the IceDogs look pretty low in my eyes.

BUT... if there was a deal between the Dogs and city, to sell the naming rights of a street to the Dogs for $1M, and the Dogs believed it was for good, and the city changed it after so that it was only for 20yrs, then the city is in the wrong.

The city council report indicated it was perpetual. It is a tiny street with nothing on it. When someone offers to put up $1M and you offer to put up a street sign - you do it and laugh all the way to the bank. If 19.5 years later you decide you want to rename the street the response from everyone at that stage will either be "oh no you don't" because the team has history or "who cares" because they have ceased to be. Cash first later.

Good article in the standard that explains the whole mess. Seems very clear that the city is at fault. http://www.stcatharinesstandard.ca/2...-communication

Case in point: the botching of the not-quite fully baked agreement to rename The Parkway to IceDogs Way in exchange for a million-dollar gift from team owners Bill and Denise Burke.
A gift in exchange for something else is not a gift.

Quote:
It was during this period that the Burkes approached the city with a desire to contribute to the build. Fashioned with then-parks and recreation director David Oakes and closed by then-mayor Brian McMullan, the deal was that the Burkes would donate $1 million over 10 years in exchange for the street renaming.

Why in the name of Hockey, would the City of St. Catharines accept a lifetime name of a hockey team that just might not be here in 10 years. For a measly $100,000 per year for ten years, which really is just pocket change for the city coffers. And then to be asked to name it after the Burkes if their children take over the franchise. Ridiculous ! Those two couldn't run the concession stands.
These are the same Burkes who have to be chased through he hallways, to be held accountable for the day to day operations with SMG. I am beginning to think that this just might be the rumoured end to the Burkes holdings with the Niagara Icedogs/City of St. Catharines that have been mumbling for awhile now.
Remember...that foremost, they are business people.
Smoke and mirrors, smoke and mirrors.
