Bottom line: Players hold the cards, if they don't want to go, they don't have to.

If they get released because of it (never seen that) the team is still on the hook for their education package. Highly unlikely they're just going to throw away an asset that's going to cost them thousands of dollars.

Assuming that team has space on their roster and wants the player as much as the player wants the team. Lots of moving parts, no wonder some players dread this time of year.

Here's a question I always wondered about, is the education package pro-rated by time in the OHL? For example, if you play 1.5 seasons, does that translate into 1.5 years of post-secondary?

If you are cut, demoted, traded ,etc. If you appear on an OHL gamesheet, the OHL owes you a year of schooling.

Obviously, player agents will negotiate even better deals. But, a standard players contract is one game= one year.

Gold packages (usually reserved for 1st round picks) get the whole sh'bang (tuition, books, lodging, etc.) The thing with those packages is... most OHL 1st round picks sign a pro contract somewhere. Once they do, their education package is gonzo.

In the past they lost the package if they signed an AHL or above deal but not lower leagues. Now neither voids it. They must however start using the pack within 30 months of completing their 19 year old season or 18 months after completing their overage season.

This was changed during the 13-14 season.

Half right. Setting foot on the ice gets you half a year. The other half comes when you survive the trade deadline in January. This was discussed when Sam Berg sued the OHL.
