I’ve noticed that in the WHL, you can trade 1st-round picks. I’m glad you can’t in the O.
I think that by the time some of these lost picks come to fruition, the Dogs will likely have re-acquired them in other trades.
Like really, 2022, 2023? I will be almost 50 by then, and no one who is in the OHL now will be by then.

Yes they very likely will have reacquired the 2022 and 2023 picks by then.

But you are missing the key point ....

They aren’t a serious contender this year ... and they’ve wasted valuable currency, those 2022 and 2023 seconds, on a player who has half a season left in his career, and, more importantly, that currency is now gone, and they won’t be able to add a player like this next year, when they are a bigger threat to contend... we have other needs we will need to add next year, and our wallet just got lighter ...

Horribly short sighted move IMHO

Neither of them are worth much they hardly score. They should sell off both and get one decent player.

Doesn't often work that way. You can shop them to your heart's content, but if no one else needs borderline players...

Bruder has been good, but not special. And Castleman may get back to his old ways. Trading him may come back to bite the IceDogs in the ass...

Just like Kijiji - you can only sell what people want...

Agreed, it’s not the greatest strategy long term, but between now and 2023, it will be Burke’s job to re-stock the cupboard. We don’t know what the future will bring. It may well be that Burke was simply seduced by the opportunity to make the Dogs better right now, the price was high, and he paid it.
As for the idea of trading Oliver Castleman, if the Dogs were offered a pile of 2nd round picks for him, maybe you make that trade. Outside of that, it’s not worth it. Teams simply will not trade you their superior assets for your(perceived) inferior ones.

he's 17 and a rookie; not enough time to assess him one way or another

Just gonna throw it out there... everyone is upset about the 2018 second round pick we gave up.... matt and dj's facebook pointed out that that pick will do nothing to help us with our go for it year next year.... the pick will have already been used and lets all be honest here is a 2nd round rookie really in the big picture of a go for it year... i highly doubt it therefore he would just be watching from the press box.. so y not spend it and bring someone in with it.. i also get that we could have gotten someone that will be here next year as well but i truly beleive that Joey made the best deal available to him

Ok. That's almost a good point. Except if someone wants him, they're not going to want him for his development curve. They're going to want him for what he can do to help now. And honestly, I don't see one OHL GM thinking he's going to make their team better. He's a depth forward, nothing more. He made the team because the coaches saw something in him in training camp. Not sure where he ends up on the team next year, if he's not moved out for a 6th - 10th rd pick, which would be a net gain for the IceDogs.
