Default 2019 Priority Selection (Draft)

Who do we draft in the first round we will probably need help on defence at least.

I would go with Artem Guryev or Roman Schmidt both D but I haven’t really looked into it much cause I didn’t think we’d have a pick

As per team tradition, it will be the best player available at the time.

As per team tradition ... we won’t draft (m)any players (that end up being regular OHL players) with size ....

I like the suggestion to build the team from the net out. Do we have a goalie? A D-man or two?

2019 OHL Priority Selection Mock Draft
https://ohlprospects.blogspot.com/20...ock-draft.html

17. Niagara IceDogs - Artem Guryev - Toronto Marlboros - Defense

After dealing two top shelf younger defenders this year in Billy Constantinou and Lleyton Moore, I feel pretty confident that Niagara will look to add to their blueline with this selection now that they have been given it back. Originally thought to be forfeited due to a player recruitment violation, the OHL recently awarded it back to Niagara, lessening the sanctions. Could also see guys like Jack Matier or Paul Christoplous here, but Niagara opts for the Russian rock in Guryev. His size and physicality should play immediately in his own end. While his offensive potential is still a bit of an unknown, his solid instincts at both ends and his size/mobility combination make him a good bet to be a solid OHL defender. (Brock Otten)

6'-2" tall and 198 pound defenseman from Russia. Who plays for the Toronto Marlies.
Our team has a lot of players that graduated from the Marlie. The only difference is that this young lad is tall compared to our previous picks. Sounds good to me.

Mid-Season 2019 OHL Draft Ranking
Created: Wednesday, 23 January 2019 16:257

Here are their mid-season rankings of players in that 16 - 21 range. A few players players ranked higher are listed as having NCAA commitments therefore making them property of the London Knights and late round “flyer” picks .

Note ( - ) Initial ranking

Can anyone confirm if the players at #16 is the one who has been introduced as a guest at a recent IceDogs game? The name Francesco seems to ring a bell.

16. (12) Francesco Pinelli, C, Toronto Red Wings
Pinelli has the size, skating and smooth puck-control that teams covet at the center-ice position. Moves around the ice very smoothly with astute positioning in all three zones. Want to see him finish plays off more consistently but the elite skills are present.

17. (44) Dylan Gratton, D, North Jersey Avalanche 16U (Penn St. University) NCAA commitments
Gratton has the look of a future U.S. National Team top six blueliner, along with the tools of an NHL prospect. Size and length, effortless skating and puck-control, and the confidence to assert himself.

18. (13) Deni Goure, RW/C, Chatham-Kent Cyclones
Goure has carried his team this season. Shoulders a ton of responsibility in almost single-handedly generating offense and scoring goals. Can do it thanks to his strength, quick hands and elite-level shot.

19. (11) Sean Behrens, D, Chicago Mission 16U (University of Denver) NCAA commitments
A fantastic skating defenseman who makes the game look easy. Can control the game as he sees fit and will often go untouched by the opposition when doing so.

20. (48) Braeden Kressler, C/RW, Mississauga Senators
Kressler has risen dramatically in our rankings and could very well continue to do so. Plays with energy and zest and has an impressive knack for scoring off the rush. Unique in his ability to slice through traffic and get shots off on the fly with a quick release.

21. (27) Artem Guryev, D, Toronto Marlboros 6’2”, 185 lbs

Guryev is one of the top rated defenseman playing Minor Midget AAA in Ontario this season. A Russian-born blueliner eligible for the 2019 OHL Priority Selection, he is a high-end skater who is fluid in transition, pivots well, and uses sound body positioning and technique to read and react well in all areas of the ice. Thrives going on the offensive and jumping in the rush. Handles the puck like a skilled forward, but will sometimes get caught in too deep if the puck is turned over.

Guryev is a solid skater who uses his high level instincts to make plays in all three zones. He added over 12 pounds coming into the season and that is often demonstrated in his thundering body checks. He is especially dangerous in open ice in the neutral zone closing out opponents and more often than not putting them to the ice. Because of his ability to seperate the man from the puck he creates multiple turnovers and counter attacks for the Marlboros. Gap control is second to none and when the big hit isn't available he uses an active stick to take away passing lanes. In fact, he has an unusual trait in that he will move his stick from his right to left hand in order to challenge his opponent off the rush.

Artem possesses a unique set of skills through his two-way component and that rare booming hitting ability. Since the Titans Tournament, he has made tremendous strides from a risk/reward offensive threat to his most recent play at the Marlies Classic where his 200 ft. game had him as one of the top defenders in the event.

Capable off the blue line as a puck mover on the power-play, he also has a powerful shot that he gets off quickly and accurately. He is poised and patient and isn't afraid to make a risky play to get his team going. He has improved his decision making in but will get too deep at times and then be unable to get back to defend properly. As he works to elevate those first acceleration steps he will better be able to compensate for his eagerness to jump in the play.

Guryev is a fun player to watch as he brings a dynamic to the game that is seen less and less in today's hockey, with his great hitting ability blended with great offensive instincts. Certainly can see him as a potential top pair defenseman at the next level and I am positive scouts and coaches will be jumping at the chance to add that physical element to their club.
