Default Ice Dogs’ Power Play

Ice Dogs need to fix (or improve) their PP.

1. Zone Entry
<> Ice Dogs need to implement an alternate zone entry system– one that does not involve a back pass.
<> Study what other teams are doing successfully (OHL and NHL).

E.g., Washington Capitals

2. Change the 5 player unit: Ham in - Singer out.
<> Maksimov’s decline in one-timer PP goals can be linked to Ham’s removal from the first PP unit. The two had good chemistry – puck placement and perfectly weighted passes.
<> LH sharp-shooter Miletic would be a perfect fit on the opposite side of Maksimov doing the same thing. It would make it very difficult for teams to cheat on Maksimov's side anymore.
<> As the PP QB, Ham will have the option of setting up Krill or Sam for one timers from the left or right.
<> RH Thomas moves to the middle in Singer’s spot and Jones stays down low.

I’ve seen back passes work teams just not the dogs. I agree on the Ham in for singer I don’t like a 5 forward PP for this team and maybe in the OHL period.

Blacksox - you should be coaching - you have it all figured out. By the way Washington (who you refer to in your video) is 13th in the NHL on the PP at 20.7% slightly ahead of our Ice Dogs at 19.7% (1 more goal every 100 chances)

The video example is from 2 years ago. It was not to reference how to run an effective PP, but rather an example of alternate zone entry system they should look to implement.

Absolutely, it can work in some circumstances. There has been too much of a reliance upon this technique, such that it has lost its ability to surprise or confuse the other team. It isn't executed well and usually results in a turnover or a slow entry into the zone. If you only have a hammer in your toolbox its amazing how often screws look like nails.
