In an effort to be fair. While discussing this issue ( closed building) with different people I have learned that Security at the Ice Dog games is strictly under Ice Dog control. We have bashed SMG on this forum for bag checks and water bottles being allowed in or not. The reason there are no bag checks and little security at concerts is SMG does not use them, strictly Ice Dogs.

Don't know where you're getting that from. I was at the Hip concert on Tuesday night, there were bag checks and full body pat downs upon entry.

The funny part was after my buddy was patted down by security he was never asked for his ticket. He walked right passed the people that were scanning tickets and down the stairs.

The same guy who escorted me out of the building told me. I have been to one concert there and there was no checks at the door.

For the last 7 years the IceDogs ran the concessions and everything else at the Jack.
You could have a smoke, a beer until the end of the game, no security checks etc.
but now all of a sudden it's the IceDogs?
Figure it out, it's 100% SMG!!

It's apples vs. oranges. MPs and MPPs are more 'higher-risk / VIP' status. Hockey players don't require that security. If they did, the Jack would have been closed during practices.

It's just SMG being given power and them absolutely running like the wind with it. It's like the Gestapo have taken hostage of our building. I'm just waiting for the arm bands to be worn by all SMG staff.

Screw'em. I'll go to a few games next year, but they can have their prison-in-lock-down way of running things. It ain't for me, and that's why I won't be a season ticket holder next year. One of the reasons that drew me to games in the past WAS the friendly family atmosphere of game night. That's so far gone now that it's even hard to remember, for me at least. When the IceDogs ran teh show, game night staff were kind and courteous because they WERE kind and courteous people by nature. Now the smiles by staff all seem part of a forced act. It ain't for me anymore.

It's called risk management. The Jack was built for 100,000 and the facility itself is probably not worth much more than that today on the books. The Meridian Centre is worth 50 million and is the property of 130, 000 residents, not just icedogs STH. The Level of Security is a factor of risk (likely x consequences). I believe the level of security is appropriate to protect the invest of the city. Also, I believe comparing SMG employees, good working folks like anyone else with a job to do, to Gestapo is extremely insulting and unwarranted. You "Alpha" should delete your own post if we are all playing by the same rules.

...and no I am not a SMG or city employee. I am a long time resident of the city who works in the private sector. I am also a long time IceDogs fan and current STH....Go Dogs Go!

I wasn't trying to equate junior hockey players with VIPs, just giving an example of private-public spaces. Here's another that probably applies better. Montebello Park in St. Catharines is a beautiful PUBLIC park owned by the city. Yet every year during Grape and Wine (or whatever they are calling it this year), the park is shut down, a fence goes up and the rules all change. So our public park becomes a private place.

The Meridian Centre is the same sort of idea. It is a public building leased out for private purposes. I would expect that the IceDogs have a strong say on who can and cannot be there duing practices. I can't imagine there is a huge number of fans that would want to go and watch but if there were some, I would suggest contacting the Dog's office directly and getting permission from the club to attend.
