Their lack of young talent is a major mistake for those who are responsible for player management and is not the fault of a head coach.

Worst team they've had is an understatement to the extreme. Since the trading deadline this is the worst team I've seen in this league since they moved back to Niagara. They're literally outclassed night in and night out. The only reason they're even a threat to win a game these days is Lodnia.

Sometimes a good coach can get more out of less talented players..a good coach can motivate players to want to give more of themselves for the good of the team..a good coach can actually teach their young players how to improve their game. Does anyone here think this is happening with our team? Thoughts?

When referencing any team in the first year of a rebuild, stating a lack of talent for their lack of success is stating the obvious.

Especially if that team is primarily a group of 16 and 17 yr old players, that have not reached their full potential. For example, you can’t compare a rebuilding team’s talent base (e.g. Niagara, NB, Kingston) to a fully evolved OHL championship calibre team (e.g., Ottawa, Saginaw, Peterborough, Kitchener, Flint). It's men against boys at this point, but the tables will turn at some point. That's the OHL.

Time and patience is required with a rebuilding team – you can’t fast forward the process (assembling talent). This is nothing new in the OHL. We have all seen this rebuild cycle repeated over and over – and even as recently as the last two OHL championship teams (Hamilton and Guelph).

In the first year of Guelph’s rebuild, they won 13 games (.235 Win/Pct). From that 13 win team only Isaac Ratcliffe (OHL 1st Rd), Nate Schnarr (OHL 3rd Rd) and Cedric Ralph (OHL 7th Rd) were part of last year’s star-studded championship team. Which is exactly what rebuilding teams do – each year, Guelph continued to add core players through - development, drafts (OHL and Import) and trades.

This is what Guelph looked like when their rebuild was completed…

Its a good thing we fans tend to forget the past quickly. If you scroll back to old threads from a few years ago, a lot of the same concerns were being express, regarding the rebuild following that championship run in 2016. With very little talent - and draft picks remaining from the previous year, disaster was predicted, but that team managed to have a reasonable amount of success.

The difference then was David Bell - the difference now is that IceDogs have a cupboard full of high draft picks they can use to add - to the players who will ultimately remain with this team as part of the core. Between Year 1 and Year 3 and 4 will see a lot of turnover and players coming and going.

Rebuild Core (Year 1):
17 B Jones OHL Rd 1 (Second year - Rookie year 5 goals)
17 K Maksimov OHL Rd 3 (Second year - Rookie year 6 goals)
17 O Castleman OHL Rd 4 (Rookie)
17 B Johnson OHL Rd 13 (Rookie)
17 M Phillips OHL Rd 9 (Rookie)
17 D Singer OHL Rd 8 (Rookie)
17 R Smith OHL Rd 5 (Rookie)
17 D Hunter OHL Rd 12 (Rookie)
17 L Ham OHL Rd 6 (Rookie)
17 P Denim IMPORT 1st rd (Rookie)
17 O Machala IMPORT 2nd rd (Rookie)
16 A Thomas OHL Rd 1 (Rookie)
16 J MacPherson OHL Rd 4 (Rookie)

Two years later, the IceDogs had these players as their “Go For It” Core:
19 B Jones (NHL Vegas 7th Rd)
19 K Maksimov (NHL Oilers 5th Rd)
19 I Lodnia (NHL Wild 3rd Rd)
19 J Robertson (NHL Stars 2nd Rd)
19 J Studnicka (NHL Bruins 2nd Rd)
19 J Paquette (NHL Preds 7th Rd)
19 M Brassard (NHL Van 7th Rd)
19 D Bukac (IMPORT - NHL Bruins 7th Rd)
18 A Thomas (NHL LA 2nd Rd)
18 K Sopa (IMPORT)
17 P Tomasino (NHL Preds 1st Rd)

Akil Thomas “To be honest with you, I’m still kind of sour from last year, still kind of upset. We had an unreal team and it sucked how it ended."

Not really sure I've seen anyone complaining about them being bad. In fact I think most wanted Lodnia and perhaps Casteman to go as well.

We all know that the biggest mistake was last year when Burke had Thomas out when North bay was being chippy and then he got injured
