Good for them, more options to in commit and become a LK. Love it.

During the weeks and days leading up to the draft, it has become abundantly apparent that ultimately for the betterment and fairness to individual OHL teams common sense will eventually prevail Ė and change in how players (mostly the parents and agents) enter the OHL draft is put in place.

With the increase in the number of players using the NCAA card to manipulate the draft this year, the situation will only get worse next year Ė after these players get their way this year.

by Mike Davies Peterborough Examiner
Complicating matters is many of the top prospects have committed to NCAA schools or indicate they are weighing NCAA options including Will Cuylie. Defenceman Jamie Drysdale, also of the Marlboros, is rated No. 2 by OHL Central Scouting and is also indicating he has NCAA options. There is plenty of speculation agents are using the NCAA option (Perfetti and Powers) as a red herring so they will fall to teams they'd prefer to play for later in the draft.

"This year seems to be a little unique in that there are a fair number of players who have made NCAA commitments ahead of the draft," Oke said.

"More players than ever happened previously. There are some who have indicated they're still mulling over offers and there are some who have already made commitments to schools and officially announced it."

What we need is a better OHL, perhaps some teams aren’t developing players as well as the others.
Perhaps better coaching, as apparently these young players feel they will be better served going elsewhere. It is their future after all.

Honestly, what 16 year old would want to play for a Sudbury, or a Flint, or a.......the list goes on.

Don’t kid yourself, all these kids want to play for a London or an Oshawa. Let’s be honest here.

Groundhog Day on this form.

Every year there are hundreds of 15 year old players that would sell off their grandmother to play in the OHL; yes, even in Sudbury or Flint. The reality is, there are a handful of players who utilize the NCAA as a bargaining chip to select a specific team. They do this for a variety of reasons including geography, team standing, coaching, family history and incentives. On the topic of incentives over the history of the OHL, this has ranged from the caliber of compensation, the agreement to hire a family member, line placement and ice time, or even good old fashioned cash. I am not referring to any specific team but an amalgam of team practices.

Many teams look to enhance their standing through selecting new candidates in the draft. In fact, the draft is structured to give the poorest performing teams the best chances to improve. Manipulating the draft through the NCAA rouse defeats its intention. The rich get richer and the poor stay poor when certain top talent will only play for certain teams. There are of course exceptions to this, players with integrity go where they are drafted (can you say Connor McDavid) whereas others mysteriously appear in the later rounds or as a free agent and miraculously decide to play in the OHL.

Three things have to happen. Firstly for a player to be eligible to be drafted into the OHL they should have to declare their candidacy. It doesn't stop them from not reporting, but it counteracts the "last minute change of heart". Secondly, prior to the start of the season, teams should be able to make trades that include first round draftees. Lastly, a defected player is excluded from the team's protected list and automatically retains rights to the player for five years.

Every team owner has a say in the structure of the OHL.

That is will unfortunately be the case. Or if not Saturday, later on in the season when nobody is looking. It is real easy to sit there and say eff you to the other teams in the league when you are sitting pretty and players are lining up to join your team. The commissioner of the league needs to remember there are twenty teams. When teams are systemically barred from drafting top players, competing seriously and winning championships, their markets fade. Maybe other markets take over but if the same challenges await a new team it is tough to get a foothold.

"So what" says the mighty, "those teams don't deserve to be in our league".

So the league shrinks, the fan base with it.

"Who cares" says the entitled, "we still fill our arena and our coffers".

But when the teams dry up and the fan base with it, who are the big market teams going to play against, and where? With twenty teams, a pro schedule and a diverse market base, the OHL has something to offer. If the commissioner doesn't think globally and promote the strength of the entire league over the desires of a few teams, it will fail.
