Default 2020 OHL PRIORITY DRAFT

PART I (NEXT LEVEL TALENT)

Next order of business for the IceDogs is the 2020 OHL Priority Draft. Using several different online sources, the following players are the consensus top picks.

Player names, ranking and scouting reports will be updated over the weeks leading up to the OHL Priority Draft (April). The list will also include 04 players with NCAA commitments.

Our list begins with the Undisputed Top 2 players in the 2004 draft class.

1 Adam Fantilli C (6.02 / 175) Kimball Union Academy (Prep)
<>SCOUTING NEWS SN – NEXT LEVEL TALENT
<> Selected Team Canada 2020 Olympic Winter Games (Youth) Jan.18-22

https://prospectpipeline.ca/2018/10/...eport-profile/

PPL Instant Analysis: Fantilli played a crucial role in TRW 2019 OHL Cup Final, notched 5 goals and 7 points in his 6 GP and was nothing short of dominant despite his extremely young age (04). A powerful skater who features impressive size and agility - can power through opposing defences with absolute ease and can control the pace of play at both ends. A tremendous back-checker and sound 200 ft player, Fantilli is the top prospect eligible for the 2020 OHL Draft if he forgo the NCAA.

STEVEN ELLIS (HockeyNews): A dominant player - he’s no ordinary prospect. Fantilli was a top 20 player in the GTHL last year, and that’s saying something given that he’s a year younger than the rest.

PART II (IMPACT PLAYERS)

Part II: Players identified as potential IMPACT players, that can have an immediate effect on a team’s success.

<>SCOUTING NEWS SN – IMPACT PLAYER

Hockey News (Ryan Kennedy): Very much a modern-style defenseman, Nelson is a smaller player with great offensive tools. You can tell he thinks the game at a high level and he moves very well. He’ll be one of the top prospects for the 2020 OHL draft.

hockey prospects
Ty Nelson is a high-end puck moving defensemen who uses his excellent speed and edge work to transition the game and play in both ends of the rink

STEVEN ELLIS: A speedy, skilled defensemen, Nelson has incredible raw talent, fantastic speed and a great ability to start and stop quickly. His wrist shot has impressive velocity. There’s so much to like about Nelson’s game, and if he adds size, he’ll be a top-five pick in the 2020 OHL Priority Draft.

* Kocha Delic C (5.10 / 175) Toronto Titans (GTHL)
<>SCOUTING NEWS SN – IMPACT PLAYER

<>NCAA COMMITMENT (Boston University)
<>SCOUTING NEWS SN – IMPACT PLAYER

https://prospectpipeline.ca/2019/11/...-devin-kaplan/

Power forwards with speed and skill. Blessed with outstanding size and strength, Kaplan uses his 6-foot-3, 200-pound frame to toy with his opponents. Capable of protecting the puck with absolute ease before skating it into high percentage scoring situations, Kaplan is as dominant as he is promising — making him one of the most highly touted perspectives eligible for the 2020 OHL Draft.

PPL Instant Analysis: Quickly rounding into a premier power-forward. Kaplan is a dynamic offensive player who knows how to use his size - whether protecting the puck or surging up ice, Kaplan uses his frame to shield possession and overpower his opponents. Kaplan recorded 68 points in 44 games in 2018-19 — the youngster brings a unique level of intensity to the ice - racked up 99 PIM last season.

ISS Hockey 2022 NHL Draft Rankings #7: Kaplan is another big, athletic center who can simply take over a game. His skill-set resembles that of a classic power-forward, but his impressive hockey IQ elevates him above others. Very strong on his feet and eats defenders alive if they aren’t squared on to him. Difficult to budge from around the net and one of the best at re-directing the puck. Very good on the faceoff (59.5%).

Future Projection: Kaplan is a terrific young prospect and one of the most intriguing 2004 power-forwards. Eligible for the upcoming 2020 OHL Draft, Kaplan is committed to an NCAA program and may never set foot in the major-junior circuit. If he does opt to play in the OHL however, we could be looking at the second coming of Quinton Byfield.

<>NCAA COMMITMENT (Boston University)
<>SCOUTING NEWS SN – IMPACT TALENT
<> Selected Team USA 2020 Olympic Winter Games (Youth) Jan.18-22

https://prospectpipeline.ca/2019/11/...e-lane-hutson/

A fast and fluid skater who can generate offence with ease. Hutson, with a breath-taking skill set, is one of the very best defenceman born in the year 2004.

ISS Hockey 2022 NHL Draft Rankings: A slick-skating d-man with no shortage of offensive poise. The knock on Hutson is his size: at 5.10/177 lbs not exactly an NHL dman typical frame, but anyone who looks beyond this - see Hutson’s calm demeanour, puck skills, impressive vision and an elite-level PP QB – a genuine top pairing potential. Hutson is far from physical in his own end, but has a high hockey IQ and positions himself to take pucks away before things become a battle in the corners, where he inevitably struggles.

Neutral Zone: Small but dynamic and exciting. Edge of your seat type. His feet are excellent; quick, fast and mobile. Can carry or pass it from his end. He is quick to defend and will dispossess opponents. Gets puck off wall, facilitated clean zone entries. Plays in every situation, sees the whole ice, is extremely athletic.

PPL Future Projection: A truly dynamic two-way defenceman and one of the top prospects eligible for the 2020 OHL Draft, although he will likely opt for the NCAA route. Hutson regarded as one of the top young talents competing within NA and a youngster whose future in the game is blindingly bright. Once stronger, Hutson should be able to ascend to the USHL or NTDP in the coming years with relative ease.

PART III (ELITE 1st Rd Talent)

The variance in assessment from one scouting website to another can be quite dramatic (e.g., thescout.ca, hockeyprospect.com, prospectpipeline, scoutingnews, ontariodrafthub, etc...).

Likewise the assessment of one OHL team’s scout staff to another teams (plus the NCAA factor) will see this next group of elite players go anywhere from 1st Round (Top 10 or Bottom 10) to 2nd Round.

Only 20 players can be 1st round selections, so regardless of where these player listed in PART III are selected they are potentially first round talent: The OHL has seen its share off elite 1st round talent drafted in the 2nd round in the last few years: Michael DiPietro, Robert Thomas, Jacob Paquette, Noel Hoffenmeyer, Krill Maksimov, Mackenzie Entwhistle, Declan Chisholm, Serron Noel, Jacob Ingham, S.Der-Argunchintsev, Cam Hillis, Riley Damiani, Kevin Bahl, Keean Washkurak, Michael Vukojevic, Arthur Kaliyev, Jack Quinn, …

* Cedrick Guindon C (5.09 / 155) Rockland Nationals (HEO)
<>SCOUTING NEWS SN – ELITE PLAYER
<> Selected Team Canada 2020 Olympic Winter Games (Youth) Jan.18-24

https://prospectpipeline.ca/2019/10/...drick-guindon/

PPL Instant Analysis: A pure goal-scorer and playmaker. In 2018 2019, the youngster blasted home 48 goals and 48 assists for a total of 98 points. Maturity and poise. Expect Guindon to dominate the HEO this coming season.

PPL Three Players to Watch (Sept): Unanimous top HEO prospect. A smooth skating and highly intelligent forward taken the league by storm. Through one month of league action, Guindon is pacing the league offensively, posting 12 goals and 23 points through just 11 games. For reference, Mason McTavish, the 5th overall pick in the 2019 OHL Draft, had 16 points through his first 10 games last year. Guindon is a wizard with the puck and can utilize his skating abilities to make defenders look clueless with tricky edge work at top speeds. With quick and creative hands, Guindon excel at creating time and space. He is a gifted goal-scorer.

STEVEN ELLIS: A high-energy player with a fantastic wrist shot for his age, Guindon does so much right - aggressive on the attack, put himself in a dangerous scoring situation and he doesn’t back down from a physical challenge.

hockeyprospect.comGuindon is your 200 ft center, that plays outstanding in all 3 zones and can control the game with his high IQ, strong skating, quick release and his excellent puck control which allow him to beat opponents one-on-one. A very dynamic player that when on ice makes everyone better around him.

* Max Namestnikov LW (5.07 / 165) Honeybaked U15 (HPHL)
<>NCAA COMMITMENT (University of Michigan)
<> Leading scorer in several major MM tournaments – along with teammate Frank Nazar.

thescout.ca
Namestnikov can take over a game in an instant. A rugged style that seems to dominate play even with his smaller stature. An exceptionally strong skater with ability to pick up speed with some explosive crossovers. His shooting ability is his strong point with a wicked snapshot and a howitzer of a slapshot. He also possesses strong playmaking talent creating high scoring percentage opportunities for his teammates. Overall, he has become a dynamic forward on a strong Honeybaked team showing why he should be a top prospect in the upcoming draft.

hockeyprospect.com
Max is a highly intelligent player - sees lanes and passing opportunities that very few players seek. He has great skill in tight areas - wonderful hands to go along with a goal scoring ability and below average size.

* Matthew Jovanovic LHD (6.01/185) Toronto Marlies (GTHL)
<>SCOUTING NEWS SN – ELITE TALENT
<> Selected Team Canada 2020 Olympic Winter Games (Youth) Jan.18-24

thescout.ca
One of the strongest defenders in the MM-AAA age group. A dynamic two–way play style. He is a very technical skater with a long–low stride, elite edgework, strong lateral movement, and high top speed. He packs a serious wrist shot from the point and top of the circles. He is extremely assertive in his own end as he fills lanes quickly, contains players to the outside, and absolutely hammers guys when he gets the chance.

hockeyprospect.com
High-end skating ability matched with great size making him a presence. Not the go to guy on power plays but has good hard shot from the point and displays the ability to move the puck from the back end. His skating skills separate from his peers but if he had more puck skills he would truly be a dominant player.

His mobility as a big defenceman really stands out - able to skate his way out of danger. Jovanovic has the ability to read offensive rushes and jump passes to intercept them. .

He wins battles in the corners and in front of his own net by utilizing his big body and outmuscling opponents. He displayed good vision and executed breakout passes. While his offensive skills are limited, his complete game stands out.

* Hunter Brzustewicz RHD (5.11 / 180) Oakland Jr. Grizzlies (HPHL)
<>NCAA COMMITMENT (University of Michigan)
<> Selected Team USA 2020 Olympic Winter Games (Youth) Jan.18-22

thescout.ca
A formidable two-way defenceman. His presence on the ice is very commanding. His strong hockey IQ allows him to read plays well and contribute as a defensive shutdown player. Brzustewicz has qualities of a top-pairing defenceman.

hockeyprospect.com
Brzustewicz controls the game from the back end - extremely mobile rushing the puck. In the offensive zone, he is incredibly hard to defend with his mobility and puck skills. Defensively he is strong, but Hunter’s true strength is his offensive ability.

* Cutter Gauthier LW / C (6.01 / 186) Detroit Compuware U16 (T1EHL)
<> Duel citizenship USA / Sweden
<> NO NCAA COMMITMENT (As of Jan 24, 2020)
<> Selected Team USA 2020 Olympic Winter Games (Youth)

hockeyprospect.com
Gauthier has speed (great acceleration) and skill. Uses his size and speed combination very well taking the puck to the net and creating a lot of offense – displaying an arsenal of moves using both power and finesse. He also showed great skill and vision working the puck around the man advantage.

A very talented player. Guaither has a quick hard wrist shot, an excellent release, and a smooth set of hands. He has good size and has a powerful stride and good speed.

* Isaiah George LHD (6.01 / 178) Toronto Marlboros (GTHL)

https://prospectpipeline.ca/2019/10/...isaiah-george/

Isaiah George should be considered amongst the top defending prospects for the 2020 OHL Draft. With remarkable strength and skating abilities, he should have no problems adjusting to the OHL game. Fans will love his offensive upside, and coaches will love his defensive prowess. Isiah George appears to be a lock for the first-round of the 2020 OHL Draft.

PPL Instant Analysis: A strong, powerful defenceman - a difference maker at both ends. Named Top Defenceman at the 2019 OHF Bantam Championships. George is a force along the wall below the dots. Strong skater -dynamic along the blue line, displaying smart shot selection and an ability to get the puck through traffic.

STEVEN ELLIS: George is a talented two-way defender. A skilled playmaker.

thescout.caGeorge is a strong skater who possesses great edgework and high top speed. His heads–up style of play helps him to quickly identify best passing options. He uses his strength well to tie–up opponents in front of the net and battle along the half wall for loose pucks.

hockeyprospect.com
George displays high-end offensive skills: great skater, good shot and passing ability. George’s vision allows him to play with poise and read the game at a high level making strong breakout passes. His stickhandling and speed allowed him to escape trouble and quickly transition up the ice. Strong board play in the defensive zone although he is not necessarily a physical player. Isaiah has high end skating and defensive zone IQ. Plays a calm and composed game and never seems to be in a situation of panic with or without the puck and plays a sound defensive game.

* Tyler Duke D (5.10 / 165) Detroit Compuware U16 (HPHL)
<> Duel citizenship USA / Canada
<> NCAA COMMITMENT (University of Notre Dame)
<> Selected Team USA 2020 Olympic Winter Games (Youth)

PPL Instant Analysis: The younger brother of Dylan Duke — a top prospect selected by the Saginaw Spirit in the 2019 OHL Draft. Tyler Duke is a dynamic two-way defender. Displays remarkable poise and creativity for a 2004-born defender. Duke will certainly stand as a first-round OHL Draft talent if he spurns the NCAA for a major-junior career.

hockeyprospect.com
Duke is a catalyst. He can skate the puck from end to end with great speed, elusiveness, and deception. Displaying vision and offensive instincts. Dangerous with either his passing or shot. He makes a great first pass and does a good job to join the rush as well. In the defensive zone he was ok. He is lacking in size but rarely gets hit or knocked down. He is strong on his skates and very elusive when retrieving pucks. Overall one the best player on the ice for Compuware in all games.

* Bryce McConnell-Barker C (6.01 /161) London Jr. Knights (Alliance)

https://prospectpipeline.ca/2020/01/...onnell-barker/

McConnell-Barker has scored nearly triple the goals of any of his teammates, with an astounding 26 goals in just 24 games - leading the Alliance in both goals and points. McConnell-Barker has proven to be a dynamic offensive force in all situations – boasting a wicked shot and the ability to burn opponents with his combination of shifty skating, creative hands, and nose for the net. He possesses a vast array of scoring weapons to his game -like an elite hard wrist shot with a powerful release as well as a quick backhand that can easily go bar down. Can be a goal scorer at the next level

Bryce is a smooth skating player that picks up speed with the puck. He passes the puck through tight windows and has the ability to beat defenders off the rush, off the half wall and one on one. He gets to high scoring areas on the ice and creates opportunities out of nothing. He is the best player on the Knights game in and game out.

* Dalyn Wakely C (5.11 / 165) Quinte Red Devils (ETA)
<>SCOUTING NEWS SN – IMPACT PLAYER

https://prospectpipeline.ca/2019/10/...-dalyn-wakely/

Dalyn Wakely has developed into one of the most highly-anticipated prospects available for the 2020 OHL Draft.
An intimidating force, showcasing immense strength. He can level opponents with powerful open-ice hits, or effectively separate them from the puck along the wall. With a heavy shot, an electric release, and creative hands, Wakely can light the lamp. Dalyn Wakely should be considered a 1st round prospect. He’s got the size and strength to jump straight into the OHL next year

PPL Instant Analysis: Dalyn Wakely can do it all – a tenacious and persistent force who makes an impact every shift. Throwing his weight or scoring, Wakely consistently finds a way to influence the game and regarded as an excellent teammate. As a strong and sturdy skater, Wakley protects the puck and drops his shoulder to drive hard to the goal. He will undoubtedly stand as one of the ETA’s top prospects.

PPL Three Players to Watch (Sept): Dalyn Wakely is a dynamic forward who can make a significant difference at both ends. Oozing with skill and strength, he can create problems for his opposition, whether by enforcing the physical aspect of the game, or by creating dangerous scoring chances. A dominant force all over the ice, Wakely is an impact player who can single-handedly shift the course of a game. A swift skater with a goal-scorers touch - work his way to the danger areas using his combination of speed and creativity, using his vision and quick hands. With intimidating strength to boot, Wakely can effectively separate opponents from the puck with booming open ice hits, as well as plow through the neutral zone.

STEVEN ELLIS: Wakely was a dominant player for Quinte at the OHF’s, tying Guindon for the tournament lead in points with 15. Wakely does a nice job of forcing defensemen to turn over the puck and his wrist shot is among the best in the ETA. Wakely’s play will remind you Francesco Pinelli’s in the way he’s relentless, making plays rather than waiting for them.

* Aidan Castle RW (5.11 / 168) Toronto Jr. Canadiens (GTHL)

https://prospectpipeline.ca/2019/10/...astle-profile/

Aidan Castle should be considered one of the top prospects to keep an eye on this season. Castle simply needs to put that offensive upside on display this season.

thescout.ca
Castle has been a standout player from the beginning of the season. He has displayed his talents on a very strong Toronto Jr. Canadiens team. He plays a dominantly fast game as his skating could be one of his strongest assets. Each stride allows him to gain power and separation between him and his opponent. Pairing his skating with a nifty and crafty hands makes it tougher for opponents to get a read on him.

Smooth skater with great top end speed and work ethic. Need to see more consistent offensive playmaking to match is high end skill set. Skates very well with good mechanics in order to get to his top speed fast with quick feet but possess a long stride. Has displayed flashes of his various skills but is not consistent. He plays with good jump, solid vision and creative passing skills.

* Seamus Casey D (5.10 / 150) Florida Alliance U16 (NAPHL)
<> NCAA COMMITMENT (University of Michigan)
<>SCOUTING NEWS SN – ELITE FIRST ROUND TALENT
<> Selected Team USA 2020 Olympic Winter Games (Youth)

Powell is a puck moving defenseman who has great skating mobility to get himself out of trouble - maintaining speed with the puck on his stick. He sees the ice better than most at this age group. When he gets into the offensive zone he can really dance with the puck and create scoring chances. In addition, he has that dangerous scoring ability of a high-end offensive defenseman. Overall Powell is a well developed and ready for the next level

* Isaac Howard F (5.10 / 165) Shattuck St. Mary's U16
<> NCAA COMMITMENT (University of Minnesota-Duluth)
<> Selected Team USA 2020 Olympic Winter Games (Youth)
- Olympic Ice Hockey leading goal scorer (7) – including two hatricks.
- 1st Team All-Star

hockeyprospect.com
Nov 2019: Howard is known for his natural goal scoring ability. He has nice hands and puck possession ability. On the offensive attack every shift. Howard is very skilled with the puck and can dominate possession in the offensive zone. However, there are some concerns about his overall game: takes long shift, often show little interest in playing in the defensive zone and does not always battle for pucks very hard. There was no question about his elite offensive talent, but his overall game is of some concerned but with maturity can certainly develop.

I don’t think it’s overstating it to say this is the most important draft in IceDogs history. The 1st, two 2nds, 3rd rounders and later picks are the payoff for the season the Dogs are slogging through right now.

A two part Question. ..1 Any idea of high end imports that will go early. 2..The Dogs drafted Chanton in the 1st rd of the import draft last year, can they draft again in the first round of this years import draft ? They could potentially draft an impact top 10 ( 1,4,7)

I'll research that and create another thread at the end of this season and since they traded away Sopa - yes they can draft in the first round.

This is precisely the reason I created that doing it the London way Thread a while back.
Do we always need to go through the slogging seasons?
Build a good core of players and continue doing so.
When the time comes, all that would be needed is to add a player, maybe two to compliment the core group.
