(Windsor, ON) – Michael DiPietro has been traded to the Ottawa 67s.

In return, the Spitfires get Russian forward Egor Afanasyev, Ottawa’s 2nd round pick in 2019, London’s 2nd round pick in 2021, Ottawa’s 2nd round picks in 2022 and 2023; and a trio of conditional picks – Ottawa’s 2nd in 2021, Ottawa’s 3rd in 2021 and Ottawa’s 3rd in 2022.

Afanasyev, 17, was in his second season with the Muskegeon Lumberjacks of the USHL. In 64 career games there, the Tver, Russia native scored 17 times and added 23 assists to go along with +8 rating and 24 penalty minutes.

Mikey will be made available to media at 1pm, along with general manager Warren Rychel and head coach Trevor Letowski.

The Ottawa 67’s have adopted a motto of “No Quit” in this season that is already turning into the franchise’s best in many years.

After the events of Tuesday, they should change it to “All In” after GM James Boyd pulled the trigger on one of the biggest trades in franchise history after 72 hours of intense, and often frustrating, negotiations with the Windsor Spitfires.

When it was all done, the 67’s have acquired what they they could be the missing piece to a Memorial Cup run in May in Halifax, after acquiring Team Canada hopeful and Vancouver Canucks third-round pick (2017) Michael DiPietro from the Spitfires in exchange for a cache of 2nd round drafts picks over the next several drafts.

Ask just about anyone around hockey who is the best goaltender in the Ontario Hockey League and DiPietro is the name that comes up and it has throughout his run in Windsor.

Ottawa's move has just made it a lot more difficult for the Ice Dogs to win the East. We really need to acquire a few bigger and tougher players to be able to endure a long play-off run and to hopefully protect some of our smaller and less physically gifted players. I hope that Joey is on the phone trying to enhance our team right now but if not he better be doing it soon. Our task has just become very challenging and should make for some great hockey along the way...we cannot afford to take our feet off the pedal from here on in and must play for sixty minutes each and every game. No exceptions. Go Dogs Go.

I do not believe that today's deal has come as a surprise to our management.
They have a lot more information at hand that we have access to.

DiPietro is a very good goaltender, that's for sure. but, he is but one player.

I keep reminding myself that Ottawa is a relatively young team that will most likely get a little bit older without sacrificing next season.

On the other hand, GM Joey is not done either

The OHL final, provided that both teams make it there is a best of 7 series. It does help to be a bit older, stronger, etc.

We should always remember that at the beginning of the season, Niagara was ranked #2 in the CHL.

Since then, our team has played just the last two games with a full roster.

I am still looking at hotel rooms in Halifax,,, even after today...

Go Dogs Go!!!

DiPietro has been the league’s best goalie and Cedric Andree has not been to far behind him this year. Exciting times ahead!
