Default Federal Hockey League has new way to declare overtime winner

I read yesterday the the Federal Hockey League (6 team pro league of ex-NHL players) has created a new rule to change the way that overtime winner is declared.

Prior to the opening face-off, the teams have the shootout process and the team that wins that, wins the game automatically if overtime does not produce a winner.

That would put the end to the way both teams play the 3rd period nowadays for sure. It the game is tied late in the third period, I am sure both teams would try to win it in regulation rather that try to win in overtime.

I played in a league that used that rule and did not like it.

In fact, when the game is tied heading into the 3rd, it's not actually tied - the team that won the shootout at the beginning of the game is winning. So the scoreboard shows the game is tied but you are losing - awful way to play or watch a game in this scenario.

The current OT system of 5 minutes of 3 on 3 hockey is an unfair (and horrible) way to settle a 60 minute 5 on 5 game. Better system would be 60 minutes - No OT (3 win, 1 tie and 0 loss).

I have to disagree with you Blacksox. 3 on 3 OT is one of the most entertaining parts of the game, and I'd rather see it bumped up to 10 mins to try reduce the amount of shootouts

I completely agree with you (and a lot of others) that it's entertaining. I just don't think it fair to say a team lost - after they lose the 3 on 3 pickup game played after the actual hockey game.

If the OT is not played in the same manner as regulation time (e.g., Basketball, Baseball), then the standing should only represent your win/lose record after 3 periods.

So if we agree the current system is entertaining for fans – then this would represent a more accurate picture of your season record.

GP – W – L – T – EP – PTS

* Win, Lose or Tie recorded after 60 minutes.

* EP – extra point.

I am in total agreement with you as to how to decide the winner and points.

I am old school and the way you stated it. 2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie and 000000 for a loss.

I can live errrrrr with the overtime but I totally despise the shootout. Always have and always will hate it.
Thanks

That's an absolute circus. I loathe the shootout, but we have to do it so those in the US can follow along. That just makes it even worse.

No thanks.

I also think it is a terrible idea but, we were just looking for sharing of opinions at this slow time.
All good but............................................... .....

We need to get rid of that damn shootout.
Let them play 3 on 3 till a winner is decided...

After all, this is supposed to be a team game not, an elite player showcase.

Iíd be ok with 3 on 3 till someone wins but I donít think the league would like that especially if teams have 3 in 3 weekends

I agree, 3 on 3 is a whole different game and does not reflect the team effort and the shootout is the worst way to win or lose. I like a win being 2 points, a tie being one each and a loss is zero. For regular season games, who cares if it ends in a tie. There are lots of ways to prioritize the stats (wins, highest goals for, lowest goals against, etc.). Ultimately if two teams were deadlocked for the final playoff spot, they have an elimination game.
