From the Barrie Examiner...

Marty party over for Colts?

OHL: Rumours swirling that Barrie coach is headed to Niagara

Posted By IAN SHANTZ

Posted 6 hours ago

Will he stay or will he go?
I'd say Marty Williamson is already gone.
The head coach of the Barrie Colts is vacationing in the sunny south, but the sun might have already set on his time in Barrie.
His one-year contract expires in August.
And if that contract is being renewed, the process has been shrouded in more secrecy than an FBI document.

It's not out of the realm of possibility that the Ontario Hockey League outfit will bring Williamson back.
It just seems more unlikely with each passing day.
Here's what we do know: if the team's ownership wants the organization's longest-running head coach back behind the bench, they'll need to give him an offer he can't refuse.
Otherwise, Williamson will take the fruits of his labour down the Queen Elizabeth Way, landing in -- drum roll, please -- Niagara.
Maybe he's already setting up shop with the IceDogs, who are in search of, or have already located, a new GM/head coach, after ditching their previous staff in the days following the 2010 OHL Priority Selection earlier this month.
IceDogs owners Bill and Denise Burke haven't publicly commented on which candidates they've talked to, but sources say the Burkes have approached Colts co-owner Howie Campbell, looking to speak with Williamson.

Campbell flat out refused that request.
Sources also say Williamson wants -- or wanted -- a lengthy extension in Barrie, somewhere around the ballpark of three to five years. That makes sense. Through six seasons in Barrie, he's run on one-year deals. Eventually, every coach figures years of service is worth repayment in the form of job security.
Neither Campbell nor the vacationing Williamson returned numerous calls fromThe Barrie Examiner, which only adds fuel to the speculation fire.
Meanwhile, in Niagara, the Burkes have said they're looking for someone with about a half-dozen years of OHL experience to fill their dual role of GM/head coach.
Williamson has -- wait for it -- six years experience in the league.
And Williamson has -- any more drum rolls out there? -- experience in both the coaching and GM roles, as he's been part of Barrie's GM-by-committee group the past two seasons.
Want more? The Burkes axed GM Dave Brown, head coach Mike McCourt and assistant coach Randy Ladouceur. They did, however, keep their son, Billy Burke Jr., on as an assistant coach. He's a former Colt, coached by Williamson. And the IceDogs have signed goalie coach Ben Vanderklok, another former Colt, to a whopping five-year extension.
It's believed that Niagara would be willing to offer their incoming GM/coach a five-year contract -- about as much job security as any head coach could ever expect.
While it's too early to officially declare Williamson's departure, it stands to reason that Colts officials would have no problem commenting on the matter if they're confident their coach is coming back.
So far, the wall of silence on the matter speaks volumes.
Hypothetically, if Williamson skips Barrie, there's another layer of intrigue. You might recall a trade made by the Colts at the January deadline. For stud defenceman Alex Pietrangelo, the Colts shipped former first-rounder Ryan Strome, defenceman Simon Gronvaldt, and four future draft picks to -- where else? -- grape country.
The IceDogs' situation is a nice one for any coach to walk into, but it'd probably be even nicer for Williamson, considering he was the guy who helped draft Strome, and he was the guy who unloaded the wheelbarrow full of future Colts draft picks.
The situation also leaves the status of Barrie's assistant coaches, David Bell and Brad Brown, up in the air.
Reached Monday afternoon, Bell said he's not under contract, but has been involved in limited negotiations with Colts ownership.
It's unknown if Brown plans to return.
Here's my guess: Williamson, who took the Colts to the OHL final, won't return. He'll be in grapetown.

And didn't one of the Burke's sons play for the Colts? Could this current Barrie coach be the same one that coached their son? (maybe different time period)

Don't forget that the Burkes are very good friends with the Colt's owners. This goes back to Bill jr. playing there. The Colt's have season tickets here and ditto the Burles have seasons in Barrie. I don't think they would jeopardize this friendship over this issue. If they hire Williamson it will be with the Colt's blessing.

What is strange to me is... the friendship between the two owners is no secret. So, if Williamson is that good of GM/Coach why would the Colts let him go?

With the owners being as tight as they are, why wouldn't the Colts owner either say to his good friend... you don't want him, he's isn't doing a good enough job or lay off that's our guy?

If you are the Dogs and your buddy doesn't want his GM/Coach anymore, wouldn't you be asking WHY? Maybe, even think if he's not good enough for my buddy's team, is he good enough for my team?

Very Strange IMO.

One part in that article that stands out is that Campbell said no to the IceDogs when they asked for permission to speak with Williamson. Yet somehow, Marty knows he can get a five year deal instead of the three year offer the Colts made.
With that in mind, and this is straight out of a conspiracy theory movie, I was told that Howie Campbell might be looking to sell the Colts next season. What if he and Burke have cooked this whole thing up.
The "big trade", a change in coach/GM and then partner as owners to bring a Memorial Cup to Niagara.
Not as crazy as it may sound.

Trades can be made as of June 1st. They'd better get someone in place before all the decent, available overagers are moved.

Yes, it would be embarrassing for the trade lock to be lifted, and be unable to trade.
