Default TOP 50+ OHL DRAFT ELIGIBLE PLAYERS

The “2020 OHL PRIORITY DRAFT” thread can continue to be used for draft discussion; however, this thread was simply created for ease of access to player information while watching the first live hockey related event in nearly a month.

*DISCLAIMER: Without the opportunity to view the OHL CUP games, ranking the top MM players is admittedly an inaccurate science (for myself). However, based on the games I’ve seen and the use of numerous scouting reports (and rankings) from multiple websites, here is my list of the CONSENSUS TOP 50+ PLAYERS in the 2020 OHL Priority Draft.

*NOTE: The TOP 50+ will not include players selected to the US NTDP or have NCAA commitments, even though several of them will be drafted in those first 3 rounds.

IceDogs are picking 2nd for the first time in Niagara franchise history… Joey Burke said, “We’ll get a calibre of player we haven’t been able to draft before. We have three players we hold in high regard above everybody else and we know at the very least one of those players will be there.” he said.

The likelihood that the IceDogs select Adam to unite him with Luca, so they can play an hour and half away from home, remains a possibility until we hear otherwise. However, assuming they're unable to receive a 100% commitment, after Fantilli and Nelson, who is that 3rd player Joey Burke is alluding to?

The IceDogs brought in Pano Fimis and Paul Ludwinski for a visit first week of January, which means they have been tracking and scouting these two for quite some time. You scout two good players enough times, with the intent of evaluating their play, eventual you’ll definitively know which one you believe possesses the higher upside.

In a mock draft posted on prospectpipeline.com, they have NB selecting Ty Nelson #1, then…

#2 Niagara Pano Fimis: After landing two minute-munching defencemen of the future in the 2019 OHL Draft in Isaac Enright and Landon Cato, the Niagara IceDogs address their need for an elite offensive centre-man by nabbing Pano Fimis of the GTHL’s Toronto Jr. Canadiens. A tough and rugged player who refuses to take a shift off, Fimis is a handful for opposing defenders to contend with who scores and creates plays at an alarming rate. In short, Niagara picks up a first line centre and, potentially, a future team captain.

#3 Sarnia Paul Ludwinski: Ludwinski of the GTHL’s Toronto Marlboros does everything well — the reason why the Sarnia Sting jump at the opportunity to draft the youngster with the third-overall pick in the 2020 OHL Draft. Well-known for his terrific work-ethic, Ludwinski is a sensational blend of speed, skill, and on-ice intelligence. Whether he find himself on the penalty kill or powerplay, Ludwinski is a remarkably effective player who consistently ensures positive results for his team. With no holes in his game, Ludwinski has all the makings of an elite player at the OHL-level and beyond.

Or maybe the IceDogs the have been targeting Dalyn Wakely or David Goyette. Bottom line, the IceDogs are coming away with a player who will be the franchise’s new star!

PROSPECT PROFILES

If the IceDogs are able to unite Adam Fantilli with his brother Luca, so they can play an hour and half away from home - expect a full profile tomorrow. However, until I hear Adam’s name announced, here are in-depth profiles of the two most likely candidates for the #2 selection.

Pano Fimis C (5.09 / 160) Toronto Jr. Canadiens (GTHL)
<> SCOUTING NEWS SN – IMPACT PLAYER
<> #1 Ranked Forward at the 2019 Beast Scouting Event
<> Selected Team Canada 2020 Olympic Winter Games (Youth)
OHL VIDEO PROFILE: https://ontariohockeyleague.com/vide...ion-pano-fimis

SCOUTING REPORTS

prospectpipeline.com: Fimis has the ability to single-handedly drive his team’s offensive game with startling consistency. Every time Fimis takes to the ice he is a force - a seemingly tireless engine and routinely out-skates his opponents. With a lethal shot, his hard-working nature, and his well-rounded abilities, it is abundantly clear as to why Fimis is regarded as one of the top prospects eligible for the 2020 OHL Draft.

Prospectpipeline.com FUTURE PROJECTION: Fimis boasts the skill-set and abilities to flourish into a consistent offensive force at the OHL-level. Hard-nosed and competitive style of play, along with strong skating and decisive puck-handling abilities. Once larger and more mature physically, Fimis will undoubtedly come to dominate his opponents at the OHL-level and beyond.

PPL Three Players to Watch (Oct): Pano Fimis is the main reason why scouts flock to JRC games. The team’s most lethal forward. Plays a responsible 200-foot game. Fimis has a positive impact on all zones of the game. He showcases quick hands and can turn defenders inside out on a regular basis. With an accurate snap shot and strong vision of the ice, Fimis has become a go-to player for the Jr. Canadiens in all situations.

OHL Prospects@BrockOtten (March 2020)
Pano Fimis: Would be the second Ontario forward for me. The thing that stands out for me is his skill and tenacity combination. Not the biggest, but he finds ways to make plays in traffic and near the crease. Speaks volumes about his skill and hockey sense. #OHLDraft

thescout.ca (March 2020)
Pano Fimis has consistently proven himself against the best competition in the age group, making him the top prospect of this draft. The playmaking centreman has exhibited superior skating and puck–handling ability. His high top speed and elite edgework aided in successful zone entries and allowed him to be first on loose pucks. An elite hockey IQ paired with his puck–control enables him to weave through traffic anywhere on the ice and take the puck directly to the net or to make an accurate setup passes. To put it simply, when the puck is on his stick, he has the ability to control the game. Finally, a high compete level makes him even more of a threat when he’s on the ice. He’s not afraid to get into the tough areas and fight for pucks or drive the net through traffic with the puck. He will be a major contributor in the OHL.

thescout.ca (December 2019)
Pano Fimis is a sizeable forward who possesses elite puck handling ability. Able to take the puck virtually anywhere, leaving opponents in the dust behind him. He uses his high top speed and elite edgework to generate scoring chances for himself by driving to the net. He maintains excellent puck control in–tight to the goal as well and has developed the ability to finish (very accurately). When he doesn’t have the puck, he uses his hockey IQ to force angles and plays the body to win the puck back for his team. He will undoubtedly be a strong player at the next level

hockeyprospect.com (various scouts)
Scouts Notes: Fimis showcased his high-end playmaking ability. His puck skills and skating are definitely amongst the best in the GTHL but against the Nats he was feeding his teammates with crisp passes all night and controlled the play when he was on the ice. His strong performance further showcased why he will be a top OHL pick and be able to contribute offensively. He never backs down from physical play and doesn’t mind getting into the dirty areas.

Scouts Notes: Fimis had a strong game and really stood out in the draws. Most of his faceoffs wins were clean to his defenceman. He has explosive speed, a strong shot and amazing stickhandling abilities. Fimis combination of speed and puck skills makes him hard to contain when he picks up speed in his zone and starts a rush. He competes hard each shift and doesn’t neglect his defensive responsibilities. In addition, as play got rough in the third period Fimis didn’t shy away from protecting teammates and throwing the body, which was nice to see from the skilled forward.

Scouts Notes: Pano is a high end two way centre with offensive upside that was evident with a goal and assist. He plays with good anticipation and playmaking skills indicating is high IQ. Has quick feet and can get to his top speed with ease allowing him to consistently be around the puck. Strong in puck protection and showed good skill in passing through sticks or stopping on a dime to open lanes.

Scouts Notes 2019 GTHL Top Prospects Game: Played with great speed utilizing strong mechanics to be active. Picked the left corner with a hard shot after gathering a loose puck in the offensive zone and created other chances throughout the game. Can slow the game down or play at a high pace making plays in the centre of the ice both offensively and defensively.

Scouts Notes: Displays the skills necessary to be an effective two way centre at the next level. He can skate well with good hands and scoring drive. Pano has a good work ethic on both ends of the ice.

Scouts Notes: Pano showed good awareness, vision, and passing on the regular and created separation from his defenders with his skating.

Scouts Notes: An offensive weapon who can create scoring chances either with patience or playing fast and doing things at top speed. Showed impressive hands, beating defenders and taking pucks strong to the net. Plays with a physical edge and finishes his checks. Skate well and generates speed with and without the puck.

Scouts Notes: Pano is a slick forward with decent size who plays the game with pace, vision and high hockey IQ. He also does not give up on pucks and uses his speed and agility to pounce on pucks that to gain control.

2020 OHL Priority Selection Media Guide
SCOUTING REPORT: Pano is constantly moving and putting pressure on the opposition with his speed and energy. Combine that with his skill - one of the most dangerous offensive players this season. He is not big in stature but he plays much bigger than he is, fearless in the corners and the dirty areas of the ice. He uses his speed and energy on the defensive side of the puck as well, always back checking and playing responsibly. Pano was the GTHL’s Player of the Year.

This short video highlights some of the skills scouts identified as Fimis’ strengths:

<> Skating tremendous speed and acceleration in his first few strides.
<> 200ft Gamehard on the back-check prevented a scoring opportunity.
<> Vision / Playmakingsetup up scoring opportunity around the net
<> FaceoffsHe completely dominates at the dot (and throughout the tournament). He was nearly unbeatable. So impressive! Puck possession, off the draw, imperative at the higher levels, especially on the PP and PK this is not a skill to be overlooked. Fimis was used in the most important situation of a game to win a draw, against the world’s best 2004s – and he did every time!

SCOUTING REPORTS

PP PROFILE: https://prospectpipeline.ca/2019/10/...aul-ludwinski/
prospectpipeline.com: One of the most sought-after prospects at the 2020 OHL Draft. Ludwinski is the type of player that coaches dream of; a true five-tool center. There aren’t many holes to Ludwinski’s game. An impact player with a motor that doesn’t quit. He can reach top speeds in just a matter of seconds and showcases impressive handles on the fly. Ludwinski is the type of player that can change the course of the game.

Prospectpipeline.com FUTURE PROJECTION: Ludwinski displays all the natural abilities along with the work ethic to be a force at the OHL level and further. A dynamic skater who consistently plays the game at an incredible pace. A tremendous understanding of the game and a willingness to do whatever it takes to help his team.

hockeyprospect.com (March 2020)
Paul Ludwinski possesses one of the highest motors in the draft. His strong skating ability allows him to create and maintain possessions of the puck. His speed and quickness separate him from his peers. His reliability on both ends of the rink and great work ethic to back check hard and break up plays are second to none in this draft. He is the model 200 ft player. Paul is already equipped with the skating, playmaking, compete level and has a natural feel for the game. If Ludwinski can unleash his skill set, he could turn into a high-end talent.

OHL Prospects@BrockOtten (March 2020)
I've been binge watching MM games like it's going out of style on @MyHockeyTV, and I think I've come to the conclusion that Paul Ludwinski is my favourite Canadian eligible for the OHL Draft outside of Adam Fantilli. To me, Ludwinski just screams elite level OHL player. The skating ability will play. He's got such a great stick as a two-way center and is hungry for the puck. Great hockey sense. Wears the C for the Marlboros. This is the type of player who can change the fortunes of an OHL team.

thescout.ca (March 2020)
About as dynamic as they come, Paul Ludwinski has the prowess to dominate in all three zones. His edgework and overall elite skating abilities allow him to dance around defenders with ease. His lateral movement, elite puck skills and ability to change speeds quickly make him able to really control pace of the game and paired with his vision allow Ludwinski to creatively generate offensive chances every shift - with a decent shot / goal scoring instincts. Strong ability to strip opponents during the on-coming rush through the neutral zone and use that extra motor to make players with possession uncomfortable. Uses I.Q. (positioning), anticipation and an active stick to limit offensive chances in the defensive end. With improved finishing he could be one of the biggest offensive threats in the league.

thescout.ca (Dec 2019)
Paul Ludwinski is a play–making centreman who contributes in all three zones of the ice. His high intensity makes him difficult to contain offensively, catch–up to in the neutral zone, and protect the puck from in the defensive zone. His passing ability is what sets him apart from other forwards in the age group as he makes dead accurate passes through traffic and at distant lengths. He is in constant motion. His vision and puck handling ability enable him to get into smart areas where he can control the pace–of–play and exploit opponents’ over–aggressiveness and/or poor positioning. He provides a dynamic element up the middle for this Marlboros team.

hockeyprospect.com (various scouts)
Scouts Notes: Ludwinski is the complete package, which is rare for a centre who has elite skill. His puck skills and explosive speed were on full display as he created offense every time he touched the puck and was the focal point of the Marlboro offense. He competed at a high level and threw quality hits to separate his opponents from the puck. Another area of Ludwinski’s game that stood out was his poise when JRC players were targeting him. He maintained his calm and drew two penalties. Ludwinski was undoubtedly the best player on the ice and carried his team to a crucial victory.

Scouts Notes: Paul is a 200ft centre. He competes everywhere on the ice whether they are up or down in the game. He has playmaking ability because his hands are quick and his head is always
up. He demonstrates skill to beat defenders coming into the offensive zone. He is a heart player that you build your team around because he gives his full effort. He had chances just couldn’t convert.

Scouts Notes: High end skating, quickness and work ethic on display in this game. Showcased an ability to make hard accurate passes in the neutral and offensive zone using good vision and skills to execute. Threw his body around in the tournament and brought effort on every shift in both viewings.

Scouts Notes: High end skating ability and work ethic to earn and maintain possessions for his team. Showed good skill and reactions moving the puck through the neutral zone or passing under sticks. Scored a one-time shot and it seemed to loosen him up and allowed Paul to play with great skill.

Scouts Notes GTHL Showcase Game: Plays a high speed, high motor game that was on display throughout this contest. Team STP’s best forward in terms of creating and maintain possessions for his side.

Scouts Notes: Paul plays with an extremely high motor combined with a strong skating ability to create and earn possessions for his team. Defensively responsible forward with an extremely high compete level.

Scouts Notes: Paul is a winger who’s best asset is his skating. His pace is solid as he skates with determination and shows good agility and speed. He is slick with the puck making him hard to check and defend against. He has the ability to fly around the ice forcing defenders to make quick decisions and exposes weak pivoting dmen.

Scouts Notes: Displayed many high end skills that makes him one of the most complete forward prospects. Plays with a tremendous effort and consistently keeps his feet moving. Has good top end speed and utilizes great edge work to separate himself from his peers. Can single-handedly create offence utilizing great playmaking skills and vision. Scored a one time goal in this game that showcased a good scoring ability and athleticism.

2020 OHL Priority Selection Media Guide
SCOUTING REPORT: Paul was the leader of his hockey team and always leads by example. He is one of the most explosive skaters in this age group and uses his speed all over the ice. His feet and his motor are always going 100MPH. He is easily one of the hardest workers in this age group. He fore-checks hard, finishes his checks all over the ice and doesn’t stop until he is off.

This short video highlight some of the skills scouts identified as Ludwinski’s strengths:

<> Speed – gets to where he needs to be in a hurry.
<> Vision and Playmaking – clever behind the back pass to set up scoring opportunity.
<> Physicality – strong hit in the offensive zone, followed by an aggressive play in front of his net.
<> Work Rate – hard on the forecheck; first one back defensively.
