If I'm Burke, I'm trying to land 2, 03 first rounders for Thomas and Tomasino and picks or 02 born players for anyone else. Go get Harrison and picks right now from Oshawa for Tomasino. They're apparently putting in a Mem cup bid for next year this summer and could use Tomasino now for that. I think you build the next cup run around the 03 born group. Why wait and trade Tomasino for an '04?
So, we are back on the Tomasino moving this season are we. Not going to happen.
As for a deal with the Petes, for me, McTavish has to be the returning player in a Thomas deal, or I continue shopping in the west.

It might be hard to trade him to the west with everything being so tight teams might not want to give up as much. No chance you get Mctavish unless the Pete’s GM loses his mind between now and next Friday

I agree, I would build around the 03 group. If they can land Harrison now I would make the deal too for Tomasino.

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but might be the best interview I've heard Joey Burke do.

And have to say so much better to hear interviews with people that know how to ask the right questions.

Great to hear Joey's New Years Resolution as well.

Happy New Year!

Like the rest of you, I’m interested to see what direction and what trades are made in the next couple of weeks.

However, in separate pregame interviews with Joey Burke and Brandon Currie, they gave fans some ideas on what the long range plan of this rebuild may look like. Both emphasised that this year’s objective was to begin the process of assembling the pieces for a franchise to challenge for a championship in multiple years. Burke mentioned they have targeted players and the specific picks they require to accomplish this - so when they reach their “window of opportunity” it will span over a couple of years and not a single year.

This is a very different approach from their first attempt at a rebuild - accumulating as many 99s as possible. That allowed the IceDogs only a one year window before the mass exodus.

This alternate rebuild requires high-end talent in consecutive years. Based on what they said, I believe their plan is to build around two 1st round 03s (Thomas get the IceDogs the 2nd) and two 1st round 04s (Tomasino gets the other one).
This multiple year window rebuild can be seen in Windsor (this year and next year) and Ottawa (last year and this year).

FYI. I’ve watched a few of 03 Brett Harrison’s games – good player but if I’m trading Tomasino for him I’d be a little concerned about his foot speed. Even on draft day, the scouting reports expressed the same concerns (lack of top end speed). “If there’s one area where Harrison could take his game to the next level, it may be with his top speed. While he skates well enough, he isn’t overly threatening with separation speed down the wing. Playing more of a power forward style.”

Harrison is still young, but some body or muscle types (fast or slow twitch) are just not conducive to the development of speed. IceDogs could end up with a Stephan Harper 2.0. A good solid hockey player but in today’s game you need Tomasino type speed to be elite.

Niagara and Peterborough would probably consider a McTavish for Tomasino trade, since it works for both teams. IceDogs get an impact offensive player to build around. Peterborough receives an elite 1st round NHL talent for their go for it year – and can then turn around and trade Tomasino next year to recoup all the picks they give up plus Oshawa's 04 1st round pick.

That is likely the only scenario where the Petes would trade McTavish - and the IceDogs would consider trading Tomasino a year early (and change course on plans for an 04).

Interesting comment if you read between the lines...

Billy Burke comment on Akil Thomas’ role with Team Canada during the post-game scrum. “That is why the Hunters’ love him because he will do any role. He is such a team first guy...He is 100% team first.”

...Sounding more and more like Thomas and Lodnia are headed to London.
