I enjoyed watching all of the players mention on this thread but, retiring their numbers is something that I do not believe is warranted.
John Tavares for example is a special player who is still having a great career in the show.

Bill Burke tried to get Petro. to come here for opening night at the Meridian with the intention of retiring his #. Petro. couldn't make it due to NHL obligations.

I remember Bill Burke saying when they traded Petro they would have been happy to have him finish his career in Niagara and put his jersey in the rafters but Alex wanted to go play for a cup.

Memo to the IceDogs: IMO, Visser's number should be retired. How about we make this happen?

Spoke with Rod Mawhood at the game tonight, and he said Mark will be coming on his show soon.

Always good to hear from all the former IceDogs Rod gets on his show.

I get that retiring numbers might not be a thing. And that's fine.

How about starting something similar to what the Blue Jays have(the Level of Excellence)? Visser and the other players which have already been mentioned in this thread would CERTAINLY qualify for inclusion.

I've always felt that retiring numbers should be through the same lens as traditional retirement - 30 years or more. The only other circumstance to accelerate that analysis might be the untimely death of the person who wore the number, such as in Humboldt.

It should be a very prestigious honor. When you start lowering the bar and doing it for too many players it loses that prestige. I don't want to knock any of the players Stroph's suggested honoring they were all high quality players. I was a big fan and enjoyed watching all of them. I would certainly consider bringing each and every one of them back for a ceremonial faceoff and put a plaque or picture up somewhere in the arena. If I'm hanging a jersey up I don't want fans coming here in 10 or 15 years and having to google the name to see who they were. IMO that honor should be reserved for the best of the best.

Mark Visentin on the Niagara Sports Report today. He brought up a lot of memories for me, and after hearing this maybe he does deserve to be honoured by the IceDogs.

Rod Mawhood does a great interviewer once again:
