So, this is basically recovering the draft picks lost in the Lodnia deal.. not great, but I can understand why the Dogs thought they needed to make that trade. So, if the picks lost roughly equal the picks gained, can we say this is a roundabout way of acquiring Ivan Lodnia for Willy Lochhead?

Of course London will be there, they just got one of the better OA defenseman available - and didn’t have to use any of their 2nd to get one. Now the Knights can use those picks, they saved by acquiring Lochead, and load up at the trade deadline.

I may be alone in thinking this but I feel like this trade was not thought out well or approached properly. Clearly, the IceDogs held all the cards in this trade – London called their bluff and they folded. In a “go for it” year, the Ice Dogs need to add 2nd not 3rd (Ice Dogs have plenty of those).

Oh well...

Seems like a deal similar to the Lodnia deal for the Dogs.

Lodnia wanted out, gave the Otters a couple teams he will play for. The Dogs got him at a discounted price because of it.

Lochead a London kid. Going to school in London, will only play for London. London gets him cheaper because either you take the 3rd or get nothing.

One trade goes the way of the Dogs the other doesnít.

In the end the Dogs trade Singer, Lochead and a 5th for Lodnia and a 3rd.

The difference being that Lodnia was an NHL drafted player (3rd rd) – whose agent was trying to put Lodnia in the best possible situation to succeed at the next level while still remaining in hockey!

Now of course it’s obvious, Lochead quit on the OHL (IceDogs). He is a registered student at Western University to pursue a career in business. Therefore, the IceDogs were under no pressure or obligation to make a deal to benefit Lochead or London. Had he reported to training camp and asked to be traded that would make this slightly more similar.

In this situation, the IceDogs could do whatever they wanted – and what they should have wanted was to win the deal (a 2nd round pick). No 2nd NO DEAL! And if that the case, Lochead remains in school where he said he wanted to be.

One question I have, and we'll likely never know, is if London spoke with Willy before his decommitted to the IceDogs and this was planned long ago. Smells kind of fishy Londonee to me.

Haha. If so add Willy Locheadís name onto a long list of London Knights All-time De-commit Team! Willy is in good company there!

Boo!

How do the Dogs win the deal if London says no? Lochead was never going to play for the Dogs again regardless. So, if the Dogs demand a 2nd and London says no, the Dogs get NOTHING. Instead, they just turned a player that was never going to suit up for them again into a 3rd round pick.

Maybe London would've given a second, maybe they wouldn't. It's a poker game. But, the Dogs left the table with a third round pick chip they didn't have when they sat down. Not bad considering when they started they had nothing to buy in with. Free money IMO.

At some point you have to stand-up for your organization, coaches, current players, future players and the fans Ė the message should be if you are going to quit on us Ė you better think twice because if we donít get what want we, youíre not getting what you want. Long term that is worth a lot more than the 3rd London threw our way as a gesture of goodwill.

This whole situation was made worse because Lochead was traded to a team that many feel could be who the IceDogs have to beat in the OHL finals. Imagine Willy being a key contributor to London beating us again - that's not worth a 3rd either. Sorry, I donít get it, but maybe itís just me!

SIDENOTE: Is Lochead even attending Western still? That would make it even more of a kick in the head from Lochead and London.

I'm assuming he's going still going to Western.

If this was a Desousa situation I would agree. However, this is a kid from London going to school in London looking to play his last year of junior in his hometown. If he has quit school, it's a different story.
