Do we always need to go through the slogging seasons?

Build a good core of players and continue doing so.

When the time comes, all that would be needed is to add a player, maybe two to compliment the core group.

It’s not easy to do that’s why it isn’t done ...

Most OHL fans wouldn’t complain about Niagara’s track record since their inception here in Niagara ... a championship would’ve been nice lol

This might be our best chance to do it though since we have so many early picks in the next few years ...

I think one thing that can not be overstated is that having a strong crop of homegrown OA players returning every year helps with having a solid team every year ... I know it is sometimes necessary but I HATE when we have to spend key assets on OA players in go for it years ...

New Beginnings?

With the high-round draft picks accumulated, the opportunity to build a team that is competitive in multiple years could be only 2 drafts away.

“…we are building our future around 02-04s and younger,” IceDogs general manager Joey Burke said in a press release. “The opportunity to add nine impact players for our future is something we couldn’t pass up. Not only have we now restocked our draft cupboard, we have multiple seconds in every year. This deal sets us back up for the future and gives us the tools to build a winner.”

Add these 04s and 05s to the group of players below:

Yes they can.

The import draft is two rounds.

The Dogs will protect Chanton and only make their first round selection. They will bypass their second pick unless there is an unforeseen circumstance. I.E. Chanton decides to play somewhere else next year. Then they would make both selections.

So our first pick in 2021 would be like a late first round pick.

Do you pass on the import draft this year and get a better prospect next year when we don't have a first rounder

I may be misunderstanding your question. When the Dogs draft a player this year in the import draft, it doesn’t effect their ability to draft again next year in anyway.

When it comes to the import draft. They’ll select a player in the first round this year. And unless both imports are returning, they’d select in the first round again the following year.

Not overstating that all - just look at what good scouting and thorough preparation can bring to an organization (and it’s future) if they make great selections with those high picks .

In 2016 (current OHL 19 yr. olds), the two teams most successful with their early round selections were:

Petes:
1. P.Gogolev, 2. D.Chisholm, 2. S.Der-Argunchintsev

Ottawa:
1. Stratis, 2. Carter Robinson, 2. Kevin Bahl, 3. Mitchell Hoelscher. *surprisingly miss on #1*

FUN FACT: Missed opportunity on early picks – but hit homeruns on 2 US decommits in the later rounds.
London:
1. *Liam Foudy (legit), 2. Billy Moskal, 3. Liam Roberston, 3. Ryan Bangs (traded), 4. Richard Whittaker (traded), 4. Alec Regula (NHL Chicago Rd.3), 5. Jon Gruden (NHL Ottawa Rd.4 ).

What did Niagara do?
1. Akil Thomas, 4. MacPherson, 4. Castleman

In 2017 (current OHL 18 yr. olds)…

Mississauga:
1 Jack Hughes (NHL NJD Rd.1) Did Not Report, 1. Thomas Harley (NHL Dallas Rd.1) , 2.Keean Wahkurak (NHL St.Louis Rd.5) , 4. Cole Schwindt (NHL Florida Rd.3), 4.Trevor Zegras (NHL Anaheim Rd.1) Did Not Report.

Ottawa:
1. Graeme Clarke (NHL NJD Rd.3), 2. Jack Quinn (NHL Projected 1st Rd.)

Hamilton:
1. Connor McMichael (NHL Washington Rd.1) , 2. Arthur Kaliyev (NHL LA Kings Rd.2)

FUN FACT: Missed opportunity on early picks – but hit a homerun on another US decommit in a later round.
London:
1.Lucas Rowe (bust – traded), 2. Andrew Perrot (traded), 3. Dalton Duhart (traded), 4. Emmett Pierce (traded), 4 Alex Vlasic (NHL Chicago Rd.2) Did Not Report YET, 5. Hunter Skinner (NHL NY Rangers Rd.4)

London’s recruitment of US talent ($$$) excellent, but perhaps scouting and development of other young players a little over-rated?

Also Saginaw had 6 picks in the first 3 rounds ( 3 – 2nd and 2 – 3rds) – and kind of missed.

What did Niagara do?
1. P.Tomasino, 2. B.Constintino, 3. I.Martin

…too early to assess the players selected in the 2018 or 2019 draft.
