US born players with an NCAA commitments should be excluded from the OHL Priority Draft and part of a "Secondary" Draft using the same draft order.

This system would allow every OHL team to take a “zero risk flier” on players with NCAA commitments, without having to burn a valuable OHL Priority selection (4th – 6th round) on high-risk players.

As an example, in the Secondary 2020 Draft: North Bay selects Roger McGroarty, Kingston – Frank Nazar, Sarnia – Lane Hudson, Niagara – Devin Kaplan, etc….

Otherwise a trend dating back to 2004 (Patrick Kane drafted 88th overall) will continue. It’s difficult on the majority of OHL teams when other team(s) draft high-end 1st round talent in the 4th or 5th round.

A couple of recent impactful example…

2016: 1. Liam Foudy, 2. Billy Moskal, 3. Liam Roberston, 3. Ryan Bangs (traded), 4. Richard Whittaker (traded), 4. Alec Regula (NHL Chicago Rd.3), 5. Jon Gruden (NHL Ottawa Rd.4 ).

2017: 1.Lucas Rowe ( traded), 2. Andrew Perrot (traded), 3. Dalton Duhart (traded), 4. Emmett Pierce (traded), 4 Alex Vlasic (NHL Chicago Rd.2), 5. Hunter Skinner (NHL NY Rangers Rd.4)

Since (probably) all of the players listed with NCAA commitments will not be drafted in the 1st round of the OHL Priority draft, I’ve included a “Snapshot” of the available players in the 2020 draft on POST #6

Usually, it’s the US born NCAA committed players that tend to create the greater imbalance (and angst) amoungst OHL teams and fans.

The US born players, have greater opportunity and desire to pursue the NCAA route, are the high risk/higher reward players that the OHL needs to protect itself from.

Canadian born players have greater opportunity and desire to go the CHL route - not always, but often we have Canadian players threaten the NCAA route - are still drafted high (1st or 2nd rd) and end up signing with an OHL team. e.g., Michael Vukojevic, Mason McTavish and Will Cuyle.

Not that it will ever happen, but putting the US born NCAA commits in a separate draft would eliminate one of the GMs biggest draft dilemma: Do we draft him, when do we draft him – is he worth burning a high pick before someone else does?

It must make it extremely difficult for most of the leagues GMs (not wearing green )

I think we end up with Rutger McGroarty or David Goyette at least I would draft Fantilli if I was NB
