BREAKING: St. Catharines city council has voted to remove the name IceDogs Way by the Meridian Centre as per the city's road renaming process. This is in response to the 2017 decision by the IceDogs' owners not to go forward with a $1 million donation for naming rights.
Council voted to use $1 million in hydro dividends from St. Catharines Hydro for the Meridian Centre Capital Project to make up for the loss. St. Andrew's Coun. Matt Harris made the amendment to remove the name. "If a donation isn't honoured, you should have the benefit of the naming right." This goes back to March 2014 when Denise and Bill Burke and then-mayor Brian McMullan announced in a media event at city hall that the Burkes were donating $1 million to the city. The road that semi-circles Meridian Centre would be called IceDogs Way in honour of the donation. City council approved an agreement in April 2014 giving the Burkes naming rights for IceDogs Way “in perpetuity.” In November 2016, the Burkes announced in a media release they were pulling the donation for the naming rights after two years of struggling to finalize the deal with the city. They asked the city to remove the IceDogs Way sign from the street. Council tried to convince the Burkes to reinstate their donation. In October 2017, Mayor Sendzik said he was informed the offer was off the table for good. At the time, the city didn't want to make a "knee-jerk reaction" by pulling the sign. |

Let me guess RSJ will say Bill Burke should have paid the million bucks even though the deal was perpetual naming rights and the City tried to weasel it down to 20 years?
Bad year, lose a hundred and fifty thousand smackers, a first round pick and a street sign. Any thoughts on the new name: 1) Cheetah Way 2) No Effing Way

Or Blacksox will come up a legal argument so the Burkes can fight the decision.

This information came from the article in the St. Catharines Standard.
In an email to The Standard Monday night, Niagara IceDogs owners Bill and Denise Burke said they've moved on and donated the funds to other causes. "We are saddened after spending years and way too much money in lawyers fees that we could not get our original naming rights deal honoured," they said. "We had decided two years ago to move on and donate these funds to other causes throughout Niagara that really has a much larger impact on our community then a sign." The issue goes back to March 2014 when the Burkes and then-mayor Brian McMullan announced at city hall that the Burkes were donating $1 million towards the city's new arena build. In recognition of the donation, the road that semi-circles the Meridian Centre would be called IceDogs Way. Last edited by retired/sectionJ; 05-14-2019 at 08:36 AM. ![]() However, if I’m reading this correctly when it comes to the St Catharines City council approving an agreement to giving the Burkes naming rights for a street called IceDogs Way “in perpetuity.”... http://youtu.be/A-brgkkjnHc |

I don’t know, but if you’re expecting something in return it’s not really a “donation” is it?

I didn’t notice, but RSJ posted that: “In an email to The Standard Monday night, Niagara IceDogs owners Bill and Denise Burke said they've moved on and donated the funds to other causes.” That is much better use of a million dollars than for street name anyways. |
