Last pick in the 2nd round? When was the rules changed. Up until this year’s draft, teams would get their regular first round draft pick plus their first round Compensatory Pick that was one pick later than the previous draft.

The last OHL draft had 23 first round picks as 3 teams had the additional Compensatory Picks.

If the player was drafted between picks #1 and #5 the team receives an additional pick at the end of 2nd round .

So are you saying they will get the 5th pick, a pick at the end of the 2nd round plus their regular first round pick?

I’m confused…are you saying if he does. Or report we get the 5th pick, 6th pick and the last pick in the second round?

I do not believe this to be the case unless the rules have changed since 2018.

I found this from a reputable OHL site:

What does it take to be deemed a "Defected" player and what qualifies a team for compensation. For a player to be dubbed defected he must not show up to training camp and the drafting team must declare him defected. Once this happens the team qualifies for a compensatory 1st round draft pick the following year 1 spot behind where they drafted. They also have a 15 day window from September 1st to 15th where they can trade the player.

A few rules in regards to the compensatory pick. They can not receive a 1st round compensation pick 2 years in a row. If their 1st round is deemed "defected" for a 2nd consecutive year then the drafting team would only be awared a compensatory 2nd round pick the following year. Also as mentioned earlier you can not receive compensation if a compensatory pick chooses not to report.

If he does not report the Dogs would get the 5th overall pick next year. They would also get a pick at the end of the second round as stated above. This applies to players that have been selected and defected in the top four. Not top 5. They would also have their own first round pick based on wherever they finish in the upcoming season.

Trading his rights would also bring a cache of picks. BUT, not as many as in the past. Since the new trading rules of only four years in advance has come in the prices have dropped.

Ignore what the IceDogs just paid, that was a ridiculous overpayment by a newbie GM. Don't expect seasoned GM's to be that generous handing out picks like Haloween candy.

Interesting article in the St. Catharines Standard about DeDobbelaer. https://www.stcatharinesstandard.ca/...he-making.html

DeDobbelaer said that before Burke purchased the Mississauga Icedogs, he was close to buying them and was going to move them to Brantford.

In the article he says, “Actually, we had a letter of intent (to buy the Mississauga Icedogs) but not signed.”….”Then we realized that the old Civic Centre only held 3,000 people with no suites that we would lose our shirt if we went through with it.”

Hmmm. Would you not think that before negotiating to buy an OHL hockey team, you would check out the seating capacity of the arena that you want to move the OHL team to? DeDobbelaer is a smart business man. There is no way they realize after negotiations that the arena’s capacity is too small.

But even more strange, after Burke purchased the Icedogs and moved them to St. Catharines, rumours surfaced that DeDobbelaer was still trying to buy an OHL team for Brantford.

“In 2015, the Erie Otters were struggling financially and there were suggestions that a sale of the team was being discussed, with DeDobbelaer involved at some level.”
https://www.chathamdailynews.ca/spor...48c1cad58/amp/

Brian Smiley, reporter for the Brantford Expositor tweeted in April 2018:
“Brantford 99ers owner Darren DeDobbelaer has talked to Mississauga Steelheads owner Elliott Kerr about the future of the Ontario Hockey League team. Can Brantford support an OHL team?”

It seems weird that rumours were circulating that DeDobbelaer was still trying to buy an OHL team for Brantford well after he came to the conclusion that the Brantford arena was too small for OHL hockey.

I wonder if Brantford would consider building a new arena or expanding their current arena. Maybe the greatest hockey player of all time could convince them to build a new arena if he was part owner of the team that would play in it?

Anything is possible but I doubt it they spent lot of money building the Gretzky Sports Centre and Mr Gretzky has his winery here.
