We just traded for Nolan Dann from Sarnia and gave up 3 more good draft picks…seems like a good kid but 19…are we going for it this year?

Yes London did.

But London did it by developing their own draft picks, trading those that they felt did not fit the team for more draft picks, and occasionally using picks to add a player when making a run.

Oh, and yes, they (more than) frequently get a high end prospect that was committed to NCAA that they picked with a late round pick to mysteriously report.

Truthfully, I felt that this is the model the Icedogs were mutating towards prior to the change in ownership.

This massive buying spree is likely to have good results for a season after which there will be a very long dry spell waiting to have the picks in the high rounds available to rebuild. Unless by some miracle, our new GM knows the secret of getting late round NCAA picks to commit.

I am a student of history. I can remember Sudbury going on a buying spree in a year that looked like they had a shot. In the process, they so changed the character of the team that their season bombed. For years afterwards, they neither had the picks or the players to improve. Grouping good players on a team does not necessarily make a good team. Team chemistry and cohesiveness are built over time.

During the 2015-2016 season, Marty traded away 15 draft picks as we were going for the championship that year. We had 10 NHL drafted players on our roster.

This summer, DeDobbelaer has traded away 16 draft picks and we have one NHL drafted player. What is DeDobbelaer doing? He is trading away our future and we have virtually no chance of winning a championship.

For those wondering, in our last run during the 2018-2019 season, Joey traded away 20 picks and we all know how the rebuild has went following that season. DeDobbelaer has not gone that far but is getting pretty close.

Looking at the fan run OHL draft database (which is not always 100% accurate) and removing the picks we traded away this summer, here is what we have left in the first 6 rounds.

2023 - 1, 2, 4, 5
2024 - 1, 5, 6 (Traded away conditional 4th rd pick which we could get back)
2025 - 1, 4, 6 (Traded away conditional 5th rd pick which we could get back)
2026 - I believe we are only missing a 5th rd pick
