Default CHL Top Prospects Game

Last week the CHL Top Prospects game was played. 18 OHL players were originally selected to play in the game. The Icedogs have 7 NHL draft year players but no one from the Icedogs was selected. Neither Fimis, the 2nd overall pick in the 2020 OHL draft or Castle, the 13th overall pick in the 2020 OHL draft were chosen to play in the game.

Was their non-selection a mistake or is Fimis, and to a lesser extent Castle, underperforming that badly?

Remembering that the top prospect game gives the NHL teams one more look at the players that will or will not be drafted by the NHL at their draft.

According to the CHL website, “the 2022 Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game showcases the top-40 CHL players eligible for the 2022 NHL Draft”.

So the CHL does not consider Fimis or Castle a top prospect. Are these players underperforming that badly? At the very least, Fimis as the number 2 drafted player should be considered a top prospect.

Fims was hurt and missed over a month Castle is playing better of late after a slow start.
