According to the fan run OHL draft pick database (which is usually accurate) after the Icedogs first round pick, our last or near last place finish will not help us much in the draft. The draft picks in the top 5 rounds that we hold are:
1st round - Our own pick
2nd round - Erie’s pick
3rd round - no pick
4th round - Oshawa’s pick
5th round - no pick

The fact that we only have our own 1st round pick out of the top 5 rounds means finishing last or near last won’t allow us to get early picks in those rounds. Making matters worse, not having any picks in round 3 or 5 is really disappointing. We have been at the bottom of the standings since the 2019-20 season. Why are we still missing top end picks. I am hoping the draft pick database is wrong but it probably is correct.

Taking a closer look at the draft database, we donít have as many 2nd and 3rd round picks as I thought. Over the next 4 draft years we have six 2nd round picks but only two 3rd round picks for a total of 8 combined 2nd and 3rd round picks. In contrast, other teams that have eight or more 2nd and 3rd round picks combined over the next 4 draft years are:

Barrie - 17 picks
Ottawa - 14 picks
Kitchener - 11 picks
London - 11 picks
Owen Sound - 11 picks
Sudbury - 10 picks
Windsor - 9 picks
Flint - 9 picks
Guelph - 8 picks
North Bay - 8 picks

Keep in mind some of the above picks could be conditional.

The Icedogs having 8 picks isnít bad. I was just expecting them to have more picks given we have been sellers the past two seasons. We appear to be in the middle of the pack in terms of our draft pick cupboard.

What were we trading to get more higher end picks besides Gushchin? Which I still think was a San Jose decision. As for your other post it sucks not having a 3rd or 5th but I don’t know how much that will hurt considering they have limited spots available anyways

We have been trading away players for the past two seasons. This season we traded away Urberti, Butler and Tynan. I would have thought they would have restocked the draft cupboard by now.

I think they kept Gushchin because he was scoring most of their goals. San Jose can’t prevent the Icedogs from making a trade although most OHL team try to cooperate with the player’s NHL team. But it would be better for his development to go on a long playoff run so there would be no benefit for San Jose to ask for him not to be traded.

As well you are right in that roster spots will be limited next season but a third round player can be used as trade bait when they go for it in 2 seasons.

If you think they wouldíve restocked by now then you havenít watched Tynan Uberti or Butler this year. As for the Gushchin thing the sharks canít prevent it but the IceDogs can tick off a team and an agent by going against their wishes how do we know it would be better for his development? They might prefer he gets some AHL games in before the end of the year

Over the last 2 seasons, the Icedogs have traded away 8 players and have acquired the following picks:
  • 11 - second round picks
  • 5 - third round picks
  • 5 - fourth round picks
  • 2 - eighth round picks
  • 1 - eleventh round pick
  • 1 - thirteenth round pick

That is a total of 25 picks, including 16 second and third round picks. But you don't think its reasonable to expect them to have restocked the draft cupboard???

That doesn't make any sense.

First, NHL teams rarely, if ever, ask that their draft picks not be traded to a contending team so San Jose asking the Icedogs not to trade Guschin would be extremely rare.

Second, if San Jose wanted him in the AHL, they would not have sent him to the Icedogs and instead would have assigned him to their AHL team. Since he had not played for the Icedogs yet San Jose was not required to send him to the OHL and could have just assigned him to the AHL right at the start of the season.

Third, after the Icedogs complete their regular season, San Jose's AHL team has only 3 games remaining in the regular season. The AHL team is also in last place in the entire league and has virtually no chance of making the playoffs. So do you really believe that San Jose thinks it would be better for his development to play 3 AHL games instead of playing for a contending OHL team that may still be playing in June?

The Icedogs kept Guschin because he is their best player, scores a large percentage of their goals, would have had no chance of making the playoffs without him and having a player of his calibre playing with young players will only help those young players develop into better hockey players.
