Default 2017 IMPORT DRAFT

Ice Dogs have the 13th overall selection in the CHL Import Draft – and they should be able to draft a 1st NHL talent in that spot – hopefully a defenseman – and hopefully they can sign him. London was able out-scout the entire CHL and draft a guy that would be the 5th overall selection in the NHL draft with the 45th pick in the 2015 CHL Import Draft and Janne Kuokkanen with the 56th pick in 2016.

Very interested to see who the Ice Dogs draft!

Andre Svechnikov (Muskegon USHL) is likely to be drafted by Barrie! The Hockey News’ early projections has him list as the #1 pick in the 2018 NHL draft.

Starting this thread so possible Import draft eligible players can either be added or deleted from this list.

Here are some of the names I’ve posted to get Ice Dogs fans started (or excited).

2018 NHL DRAFT - IMPORT PROSPECT?
1. Andre Svechnikov RW (Muskegon USHL): Big talented winger
2. Rasmus Dahlin D Frolunda (SHL): A difference maker with top-end skill.
4. Filip Zadina LW Parpubice (Cze): Fast, can shoot and has a high-end motor.

2017 NHL DRAFT - IMPORT PROSPECTS?

3. Timothy Liljegren, D, Rogle (SHL): Liljegren seems to be back on track after illness and a loan to Timra. His skating and offensive instincts are excellent and he’s getting some nice responsibility with Rogle.
Top blueliner available. Remarkable and tireless skater with outstanding mobility and range. Can QB your power play with confidence. Sees the ice and all of his options really quickly. Liljegren has a legit shot at grabbing the No. 1 ranking this season.

6. Klim Kostin, RW, MVD (Rus.): Surgery ended his nightmare season, but Kostin is enough of a known quantity thanks to earlier international duty. He’s a big, powerful kid with loads of talent.
Selected first overall in CHL Import Draft by the Kootenay Ice, but is staying in Russia to play for Moscow Dynamo. More of a playmaker than a shooter. Has a big frame and plays with tremendous skill. But with Valeri Nichushkin bolting the Dallas Stars for the KHL you wonder if the ‘Russian flight factor’ may come into play on draft day.

9. Eeli Tolvanen, LW, Sioux City (USHL): A wicked shot in a smaller package. The Boston College recruit is a pure goal-scorer and draws penalties with his skill. Mixed opinions out there on his feistiness.
Eeli Tolvanen, LW, Sioux City Muskateers (USHL) Such an exciting player. Tolvanen has the ability to bring fans out of their seats. Was drafted by the OHL’s Oshawa Generals but is heading to Boston College.

10. Miro Heiskainen, D, HIFK (Fin.): Smooth-skating defensemen are in and Heiskanen may even challenge Liljegren for draft stock. Some scouts thought he was Finland’s best blueliner at the world juniors.

11. Martin Necas, RW, Kometo Brno (Cze.)
A smallish center (5-foot-11, 150 lb.), Necas is agile and elusive and really likes to handle the puck. He’s a natural playmaker with a pass-first mentality. Scouts worry about his tendency to over-handle the puck and he can be predictable at times—driving up the ice, posting up and looking for pass options is his go-to move.

12. Kristian Vesalainen, LW, Frolunda (SHL)
Strength and power along with extremely deceptive speed handling the puck. Most project him to be at least a second-line player and many see him as a top-tier guy. Doesn’t play at the level of Patrik Laine and Jesse Puljujarvi, but he did see 19 games of action with Swedish champs Frolunda (five in the playoffs) as a 16 year-old, so there is definitely something there. The Big Finn is fluid in Swedish, which has helped him excel in the SHL.

14. Elias Pettersson, C, Timra (Swe.)
The cliché "200-foot game" applies to Pettersson. The younger brother of Nashville prospect Emil Pettersson, he’s a lanky centre who excels at distributing the puck. Still very lean and needs to pack on some pounds for the next step, but as he gets stronger and more mature the debate will be how high can he go? Because the potential is there.

23. Lias Andersson, C, HV71 (SHL)

30. Erik Brannstrom, D, HV71 (SHL)
This year’s Samuel Girard? Undersized by traditional standards for a defenceman but transitions pucks smoothly and plays hard.

OTHERS ?
Urho Vaakanainen, D, JYP (Liiga) His game includes a strong offensive element that can handle quarterbacking a power play. Solid all-around skills.

Marcus Davidsson, C, Djurgardens (SHL) A slick skater with good hockey sense who distributes the puck well and can create offensively.

Pavel Voronkov (Avto Yekaterinburg),
Fabian Zetterlund (Farjestad),
Ostap Safin (HC Sparta Praha),
Tobias Geisser (Zug),
Ivan Chekhovich (Baie-Comeau Drakkar)
Kalle Miketinac (Frolunda).

According to Brendan Ross (Director of Scouting – thescout.ca),

“Agents basically run the import draft. In the past, I've had OHL teams contact me to see if I had heard any players who were willing to report. So a lot of times it's tough for teams to even confirm players’ intentions. They're reaching out to a lot of people to gather tough-to-obtain infomation.

Seems that most:
1. Pick through the NHL drafted players (NHL Draft is conducted before the Import Draft).
2. Take a shot at someone who has shown some level of interest in playing in the CHL.”

Great information. I was wondering how that worked too.

When is the draft and when do we have to release our imports before the draft...also, im sure we could do better than Demin, unless he adjusts better to Canada, but if we dont find someone we like better than Macala, can we resign him?

I believe that the NHL draft is around the 23rd and 24th of June with our Import draft being held during the following week.
I also believe that if one or both of our imports from this season do not return next year, they would have been informed during their exit meetings before leaving the City.

Yes absolutely, or another team could - essentially at that point he is a free agent.

Interesting story after last years’ Import draft – some of the big names are being recycled in the 2017 Import Draft, but it is evidently not an easy task to get them to sign.

Here are the need-to-know picks from the 2016 CHL Import Draft By Ryan Kennedy

Which players are coming over and who do you need to know with NHL affiliations or high draft aspirations?
The CHL Import Draft is never a dull process. Because the kids picked are under no pressure to come over here, it's never just a matter of Best Player Available. And since junior teams all have different rebuilding/contending cycles, sometimes BPA is irrelevant anyway. Some have already been drafted by NHL teams; other younger picks are hoping to boost their stock for upcoming drafts

Some of the most important names that were called today (June 28th, 2016):

Agreed.

Machala wasn't all that bad. But nothing all that great either. They will likely bring him back.

The devil you know is better than the devil you don't.

A bird in the hand is better than one in the bush.

Don't know what you got till its gone.

Enter other cliches as appropriate.

None of the aforementioned apply to Mr. Demin IMHO
