Those who are frustrated with the results of recent games - is a result of fan expectations being unrealistic for a team in the 2nd year of their rebuild. The fact is - winning 50% of their games is realistic – finishing 4th or 5th is realistic! So, with that in mind – the Ice Dogs are right on track and actually off to a good start to year 2.

You can’t pick the teams you play, any more than you can pick your family. However, of the Ice Dogs 7 wins and 4 OT/ties, only 2 of those games were against a team waiting on NHL players to return: Peterborough (Korostelev) and Mississauga (Tippett and McLeod).

Too early in the rebuild to declare this team “not talented’ enough – the Ice Dogs are 16 games into year 2 of their rebuild – young players will be developed and veterans will be added as they move along this process.

They don’t have a lot of NHL draft players at the moment, but that’s really not much different than the Ice Dog team that went on a championship run in 2016. To the 5 NHL drafted players on their roster – the Ice Dogs added drafted players like Ho Sang, Jenys, Wesley, Mantha, Nedeljkovic - and Maletta got his ELC in his OA year.

Next year, it's possible the Ice Dogs could have Jones, Maksimov, Thomas - possibly MacPherson NHL drafted and Roberts - Dhillon signed to ELC. However, they have some assets they can use to add to that total next year.

Look no further than the #1 team in the CHL (Sarnia Sting) as an example of a similar rebuild. Last year, they were a .500 team (31 wins) and finished in 8th place. This year, Sarnia is atop the entire CHL with only 5 NHL drafted players from rounds 2, 4, 5, 6, 6. However, they have some assets they can use to add to that total this year.

No one really knows if the Ice Dogs will develop into a championship team or NOT but there is no reason to believe they can’t. We’re all hoping they do! So, be patient and let’s see what happens!

Go Dogs!

Go Dogs!
Ho-Sang cost McCool (17 year old 1st round pick, so next year that would be Tomasino) and 3 second round picks.
Ned and Wesley cost 3 second round picks and 2 third round picks.
Harper cost 2 second round picks, a third round pick and a 5th round pick.
Mantha cost a 2nd round pick and a 5th round pick.
Jenys cost two players off the roster.

Boston cost another third round pick.

Total: NINE 2nd round picks, FOUR third round picks, TWO 5th round picks and McCool (1st round pick)

The Dogs don't have anywhere close to that in the cupboard, add the fact that prices continue to go up. So, you are unlikely to get those type of players at that price even if you had the picks to do so.

Again, just my opinion.... I just don't see it happening next year.

I can certainly respect the fact that this just your opinion, but keep something in mind – I’m only suggesting they add 2 elite OA (costing assets) and 1 or 2 Import players (only costing money) and not necessarily a 1st Rd NHL pick with 2 OHL years left. No need to make a trade like that.

However, McCool and Tomasino would bring a very different return in their 2nd OHL years. Just like Akil Thomas in his 2nd OHL year would bring back a very different return than McCool.

Not that the Ice Dogs would trade Tomasino or Thomas in their respective 2nd years, but they would bring back a HUGE return - that McCool was not capable of doing. If they did something bold like that, you definitely wouldn't have to add any 2nd round picks.

The Ned and Wesley trade costing them 3 second round picks and 2 third round picks was a great trade and great value. That is the type of deal the Ice Dogs should look for next year.

Harper was not NHL drafted or signed – and they grossly over-paid for limit service and effectiveness. Not going to even comment on the Boston deal.

Jenys cost them Aagard and Wilkie. Aagard had to be part of the deal – and as for Wilkie – we owe Sudbury a beer for that.

Here are just a few of the potential high-end OA talent that could really change the look of an OHL team next year:
Chris Paquette, Adam Timleck, Adam Rymsha, Will Bitten, Tim Gettinger, Brandon Saigeon and Kyle Maksimovich.

Current Ice Dogs Assets:
Ian Martin (01)
Andrew Bruder (00)
2019 2nd, 4th, 5th,…
2020 3rd, 4th 5th….
2021 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, 4th, 5th….
2022 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, 3rd, 4th, 5th….

Like the US dollar or housing - player values fluctuate from year to year – depending on the market.

A good example of what it might cost the Ice Dogs next year to get an elite OA player is Kole Sherwood. Ice Dogs have more than enough assets to pay out to get a couple of players of his calibre.

Even a player like Cole Candella (98) – who will likely be back for another OHL year is affordable to the Ice Dogs next year.

97 Kole Sherwood to KIT for:
- KIT 2nd 2019
- SSM 2nd 2020
- KIT 3rd 2021
- KIT 5th 2020

98 Cole Candella to SBY for:
-LDN 2 2018
-WSR 3 2018
-SBY 3 2019
-SBY 3 2022*conditional

97 Troy Lajeunesse to SBY for
- 4th 2021

Agreed, the NED/Wesley deal was a great one. But, the reason they that got good of a deal, was because of the relationship between Vellucci and Williamson. Vellucci the long time Whalers/Flint coach/GM who moved on to the Hurricanes organization who held the rights to both of those players greatly influenced that move when the Hurricanes wanted those players out of the circus that was going on in Flint. I wouldn't be counting on that falling into the Dogs laps again.

Legit question: Do you believe Burke has those same connections to get something like that done?

I believe that some of Williamson's connections actually disadvantaged us. Some of the trades he made were wholly questionable.

I was one of those who wish for Harper even though, I thought that the price paid for him was way to high.
And, I believe that he did not help take us over the top.
I was kind of disappointed in his play while here, but, that was a long time ago and what is done is done.
It was still a good run.

Boston was the other head-scratcher.

Good question! Not really sure what the answer is though. I'm hoping that Burkes have been involved in the OHL long enough to have formed some relationships with other owners, GMs and coaches.
