Ok, how does this work. Did they draft him because he might change his mind? Or does this mean he did change his mind?

Otherwise, why waste the pick?

You try and get him to change his mind or maybe he goes to school and discovers it's not for him. At this point in the draft all players may or may not play. Some by choice, some because they're not good enough. All about risk/reward. I'd rather swing for the fences and try a land a difference maker than land a so-so roll player that plays 2 or 3 mostly forgettable years in the league myself.

They probably took him cause need a goalie and they are hoping he changes his mind and really from about the 5th round on its take best available and hope he chooses the OHL over college or university

It's a kid who should have been drafted earlier but is committed to NCAA. It means the Dogs have work to do. If they can convince him to report, it's a steal. If they can't it's a wasted pick. They have to roll the dice every once in a while. Fans complain about other teams drafting players that have said they're taking the US college route then showing up after getting drafted later than they should.

This is the Dogs taking a stab.

Niagara select two forwards, one blue-liner with first three picks
By Bernd Franke, Postmedia Network

http://www.stcatharinesstandard.ca/2...is-three-picks

Director of player personnel Joey Burke admitted the team was worried that the 5-foot-11, 170-pound centre would be gone by the time the IceDogs' pick came up.

“This is the guy we've been targeting all year at the top of our board,” Burke said in describing Tomasino as “extremely, extremely dynamic.”

“In my opinion, he has the best feet in the draft. He's an exciting playmaker, fantastic hands, fantastic vision, does everything at an extremely fast pace.”

“I think he's going to be a perfect fit with our organization and the style we play.”

Tomasino, who turns 16 in July, scored 37 goals and collected 31 assists for 68 points in 54 games for the triple A minor midget Mississauga Rebels.

Or blocking another team from getting him for nothing two years from now when an NHL club says go play in the OHL. This way those "certain teams" will have to pay us if he only has room in his heart for them. Better that kind of pick than the "friends and family" picks that never make the team.

I'm all for rolling the bones on a pick like this .

Really after the top few rounds inthe OHL draft it's a crapshoot anyways.

PLUS, it potentially keeps him away from 'other' teams.

I'm good with it...

Anyone know off hand what Thomas' numbers were in his draft year?

I'm too lazy to look ...
