Default Akil Thomas 2019-2020

What a start to Akil Thomas’ 2019-2020 season. His trade value is skyrocketing!

Craig Button - “Akil Thomas is having an unbelievably great game.”

2019 WORLD JUNIOR SUMMER SHOWCASE REPORT ( Akil Thomas)

Throughout the entire game, Thomas was engaged in all three zones, making smart plays and getting involved rather than lurking on the perimeter. Thomas has been working on improving his strength for this year. “I felt really strong, feel like I could bump a lot of guys off the puck,” Thomas said. Improving his strength was a focus of his in the off-season and he said he felt as though he’d accomplished that goal.

His ability and willingness to play up and down the lineup, in whatever position he’s asked to take, could bode well for him being selected to represent Canada at the upcoming World Juniors tournament. “I can take faceoffs, I can play center, I can play wing, I can be a power forward, I can be a playmaker,” Thomas said in describing his versatility. “I want to be a guy that the team can depend on in situations like that, score a big goal, just play whatever the coach needs, because an event like this, everyone’s so good and skilled. So being versatile is pretty valuable.”

2019 NHL CAMP (LA KINGS)

The Athletic Names Nine LA Kings Players to Top Prospects List
The Athletic's Corey Pronman ranked the Top 124 NHL Prospects Entering the 2019-20 Season, and the LA Kings had nine players on the list - more than any other NHL team.
"Akil Thomas was a top player on one of the best teams in the OHL, clearing the 100-point mark. He's a highly skilled and highly intelligent center. Thomas was often the player Niagara wanted with the puck on his stick because of his creativity and ability to make things happen. He can run a power play very well off the flank with his vision, and he can shoot it as well."

Akil Thomas hopes on-ice transformation will help him earn a spot on the kings
LA Times – Sept. 6, 2019
Since being drafted by the Kings in the second round in 2017, Thomas has undergone a transformation. The player who once classified himself primarily as a playmaker, has adopted a new mentality that has changed his game. This [past] year, I wanted to be more of a shooter,” he said. “It paid off.”
He made it his focus last offseason. The result: he finished 14th in goals and fifth in shooting percentage (18.6%) in the OHL in 2018-19, elevating his status as one of the Kings’ best prospects – the Sporting News ranked him fourth in the organization’s pipeline, while The Athletic pegged him at No. 7. “I matured physically, mentally,” Thomas said. I’m definitely ready to show them that I’ve progressed and can play at the next level.”

ROOKIES – San Jose 7, Los Angeles 3 – Recap, plus Stothers quotes
Zach Dooley September 10, 2019
On anyone he felt had a good camp that maybe flew under the radar
If you’re going to pick a guy under the radar…Akil Thomas, I really liked him. I think it’s a marketed improvement over last year’s camp. It’s just a different presence that he has about himself both on and off the ice and I think it’s real impressive. You can see that he’s matured and he’s feeling good about himself and so he should. If you’re going to pick somebody in that department, that’s the first one that comes to my mind.

Kings prospects show plenty of promise at rookie tournament
-Los Angeles Times (Sept.11)
Akil Thomas: Thomas (a 2018 second-round pick) showed up with renewed confidence and composure. He was an impact players in all three games (rookie tournament), including on special teams.
Kings rookie team coach Mike Stothers: Of Thomas who transformed from a pure playmaker to more of a scoring threat last season in the OHL, and did a little of both during the rookie tournament, Stothers said: “There’s just a different presence he has about himself, both on and off the ice. It’s really impressive. You can see this kid has matured, and he’s feeling good about himself.” Thomas will go back to juniors but appears on track to reach the NHL full-time within the next several seasons.

Jon Rosen@lakingsinsider
-Los Angeles Times (Sept.17 NHL Exhibition Game @ Arizona)
GOAL: #LAKings. 3-1 in Glendale. Akil Thomas. Grundstrom strips Bahl of the puck behind the net before feeding an unmarked Thomas, who snaps the feed past Raanta's outstretched left pad.

Akil Thomas comes into this preseason as one of the Kings’ most intriguing prospects. He knows he’ll be returning to the OHL and is set to become the captain of his Niagara IceDogs team this year.

I don't believe they will (or should) trade him this soon but if they decide to...it had better be a "deal you can't refuse." Period.

Here are the players the IceDogs’ scouts (and fans) should be tracking over the next several months. No need to rush this. This requires hockey operations to get to those rinks, scout these players and make an informed traded - imperative that the IceDogs get this right.

Year 2: 00s OA – Core 01s + a few key 02s

When they trade Akil I would personally look to try and get a LD or C (assuming they get a player which people expect)

Ideally, the IceDogs should be targeting a C in exchange for a C. If it’s an 03 they covet, Peterborough, Sudbury and Kitchener fit. If they are seeking an 02 or 03, all six teams have players of significant interest.

This year, along with acquiring a young prospect (03 or 02), the IceDogs have to find a trading partner that can provide 2nd and 3rd picks in the 2020 (04s) and 2021 (05s) draft.

Next year, for Tomasino, IceDogs can trade for an 03 or 04 plus picks in 2022 and beyond.

I would trade him to any team but London

I really don’t want to help that team win a title

Anybody else really I don’t care

But not London
