Post League Attendance 2018-2019

In reviewing the current attendance statistics for 2018-2019, Niagara has made their way up to third place behind Kitchener and London (click here). While that bodes well for the IceDogs, only eight teams have over 3,000 sold tickets each game.

With the OHL insisting that new franchises have 5,000+ seats in their facility, is this in touch with reality?

Mississauga currently trails all other teams in attendance with only 1,973 paid seats per game. Can this franchise stay afloat or is it the final year for Steelhead hockey?

On May 1st of 2018, the Steelheads announce a new lease agreement with the City for 5 more years.

This owner has very deep pockets for sure and they must have very team friendly terms in the contract.

A few of the teams have low attendance due to arena capacities such as our second favorite Owen Sound Attack.

Contrary to popular belief, wealthy people don't get their money by making poor financial decisions, and they certainly don't keep it that way. The owner may want to fund a few years (like Burke did) but not forever. While Paramount signed the lease as well, they will have an expectation to turn a profit in the arena and concessions also.

Is is not our place to correct but, so that people know......

Melnyk sold the team in May of 2012 to Elliot Kerr (President of Landmark Sports) in which he was apparently and still is a popular sports agent.

I have read in the past that he is determined to keep the team in Missy at all cost. He, to this day, resides in Mississauga and apparently well connected with the politicians of Missy, especially Hazel the former Mayor.

I applaud him for his efforts but, it is disheartening to see the crowds they get at games.

And, I agree with you 100% about Melnyk. At one point, in case some of our new members are not aware,

Melnyk owned both the St. Mikes (Steelheads today) and the ice Dogs teams.

Melnyk sold the Ice Dogs to Bill Burke and family and they fortunately for us, moved our beloved team to St. Catharines in 2007.

Maybe Elliott Kerr has a friendly contract but when youíre averaging less than 2000 a game how can you not bleed money?
Why beat a dead horse? After about 20 years of OHL hockey in Mississauga the citizens there have demonstrated that THEY JUST DONíT CARE.
Maybe itís arena location or they only care about the Leafs...whatever. They have proven that they wonít support this team on a regular basis.
It must be terribly frustrating to make all these efforts and spend your money on a franchise in a city where the people (save for a few) could care less. How many chances will that city get?
The question still remains though...where would they go?

I agree with you on all of the above.

My choice for a new Missy re-location would be Cornwall. Then restructure the Eastern Conference moving both Erie and Hamilton into our Division, Maybe even include Guelph.
