Default Which Teams Could Fold Post COVID?

Based on the attendance statistics for 2019-2020 are any of the bottom ten teams in danger of folding given the apprehension over the COVID-19 situation? Financially, some teams are already operating at break-even or taking a loss based upon their ticket revenue. If the OHL is only 34 games next year, which teams will close up shop or which can weather the deficit? Multiple choices are allowed!

I think NorthBay and Missy might fold.

North Bay will be fine, their owner has very deep pockets and loves owning an OHL team. He goes to every game (home and away).

I donít think any teams would fold. An OHL team is worth $7 - $12 million and there is no shortage of potential buyers for hockey teams. Perhaps teams will be sold or at worst suspend operations for a season but no owner is going to completely fold their team and miss out on a sale of $10 million.

When a franchise starts costing an owner money, rather than breaking even (but earning equity) or making money - it could be time to stick the for sale sign on center ice and wind down their ownership. You'll remember decades ago the Niagara Falls Thunder folded (in that the owner of the day sold it) and it reemerged as the Erie Otters. So while I agree with you that a team may go elsewhere and an owner would still make money off of the sale, teams as they exist currently may not survive the COVID crisis.

OHL, nevermind, all sports teams are valued based on future cash flow and profitability .... I would hazard a guess that with the uncertainty with covid for he next couple of years potentially, if an owner wanted to cash out and sell now, they aren?t going to see any where near the value attributed to their franchise just six months ago.

It is a buyer?s market right now, if any (a) have the risk appetite to acquire an OHL team and (b) the cash.

Can you imagine if the NHL was trying to get their 32nd franchise expansion fee now, amidst all of this covid pandemic ? Can?t imagine anyone would be stupid enough to fork over that kind of money right now. That Seattle owner doesn?t even have a player under contract and I bet that franchise is already not worth what he paid for it.

For the foreseeable future professional sports leagues aren?t going to be the cash cows they used to be ... primarily NHL and MLB IMO are most affected by covid ...

Speaking for both of us here, money for tickets is not an issue. Fan safety will be our Number 1 priority. Social distancing? How will that work.
I assume that elevators will be out of bounds for fans, maybe, or a very small number of fans allowed on. Etc. etc........
