Default OHL Realignment Idea

Fan Forum Members,fficeffice" />>>
>>
I plan to submit this as a proposal to the OHL Commissioner David Branch. I realize he may not even read it, maybe delete it or simply dismiss it, however, Branch may read it and see something in the proposed realignment idea that he likes. >>
>>
So with that in mind, I wanted to get input from our fan forum site and draw on your expertise on my proposed realignment idea that I had posted in a different thread. >>
>>
I welcome ALL input, ideas and suggestions on how this proposal can be perhaps improve, altered or submitted as is. >>
>>
Understanding that no proposed realignment can possibly be perfect – let’s see what we, as a group, can come up with.

Blacksox Realignment Idea:

SOUTHEAST DIVISION Hamilton, Niagara, Mississauga, Erie, Guelph
SOUTHWEST DIVISION: London, Sarnia, Windsor, Flint, Plymouth

NORTHEAST Peterborough, Oshawa, Barrie, Owen Sound, Kitchener
NORTHWEST Ottawa, Kingston, NB, Sudbury, SSM

>>

NOTE: By the very nature of their geographical location SSM is difficult to place, however, when I calculated the distance they travel in their current West Division = 2158km. In this Northwest Division = 2420km. A difference of 262km. Not great, but not that bad either. SSM would also save time by not having to cross the US border as often - as ckg927 mentioned in another post SSM travels can be long and difficult having to cross international bridges - plus the Straits of Mackinac bridge. So maybe this would work better for SSM in term of relative distance as opposed to absolute distance. >>

I think that the proposal that Fishfan has come up with makes a lot more sense to me. I honestly don't think that David Branch will even consider any changes unless he was the one who came up with the idea. It is always his way or the highway and he does not appear to be receptive to any community involvement. Just my perception. Go Dogs Go!!!

I like fishfans proposal better as well for a couple of reasons.

1. As previously stated...it makes better sense geographically, although I'm not sure how Owen Sound would feel about it.
2. On a purely selfish note...it gets the Battalion and Steelheads out of our division. That gets my approval right there.

Let's be honest no matter what realignment they come up with (if any) there will be some teams not happy with travel or broken rivalries or both. Sure glad I'm not making those decisions.

I like it a lot! Great job Fishfan - also great initiative Blacksox! Branch may not use it or give credit but it would make for a better league!

Splitting the Knights & Rangers??
Huge rivalry there, just saying.

Schedule can be adjusted to accommodate those types of things, just as it is now. The Otters and Dogs play six times a year even though they're not only in different divisions but different conferences.

Some might say there is a "huge rivalry" between the two former Mississauga teams too - but in reality I think we would both rather play other teams!

Thank you for all the great input!

On behalf of the Ice Dogs Fan Forum site, I have two pretty good proposals for OHL Commissioner David Branch – which he can ultimately claim were his idea .

I plan to submit what is essentially a combination of the two ideas proposed. I did a close study of the numbers (km) from both suggestions and here is what the numbers revealed.

DIVISION A: We both agree that this configuration makes sense in terms of – geography and mileage.
Flint
Saginaw
Windsor
Sarnia
London

DIVISION B: Fishfan I really like your idea of putting Kitchener in this division instead of Mississauga.
Kitchener
Guelph
Hamilton
Niagara
Erie

These two divisions would work very well in every respects – Kitchener can continue to play London in what are classified as “Rivalry” games. Niagara could continue to play Mississauga in their “Rivalry” games (even though that is not so popular for the fans – I think the Ice Dog organization like that short trip for their young players).

So when I reviewed both proposed divisions for the final 10 teams – that is where things become a bit convoluted.

The difficulty I see with both of our ideas is the proper placement of SSM and Owen Sound. Based on where they are located geographically, there is NO grouping that will work for BOTH teams - one of those teams will get the short end of the deal.

So I did the math to see which one of those two teams is affected more adversely or less adversely.

Here is the mathematical truth.

Fishfan proposed set up of the final 10 teams:
DIVISION C
Owen Sound
Barrie
North Bay
SSM
Sudbury

DIVISION D
Ottawa
Peterborough
Kingston
Oshawa
Mississauga

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Owen Sound would travel 1570km
- Owen Sound currently travels 1120km in the Midwest Division which would be an extra 450km = 30% increase.

SSM would travel 2030km
- SSM currently travels 2158km in West Division which is only an additional 128km = approx. 1% increase.

Good for SSM (1% increase) – but not so good for Owen Sound (30% increase).

Blacksox revised set up of the final 10 teams:
DIVISION C
Owen Sound
Oshawa
Barrie
Mississauga
Peterborough

DIVISION D
SSM
Ottawa
Kingston
North Bay
Sudbury

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Owen Sound would travel only 820km
- Owen Sound currently travels 1120km in the Midwest Division which would = 30% decrease.

SSM would travel 2490km
- SSM currently travels 2158km in West Division which is only an additional 342km = 13% increase.

Good for Owen Sound (30% decrease) – Not too bad for SSM (13% increase)

CLOSER LOOK AT THE NUMBERS:
The drawback I see with Fishfan proposal in comparison to mine is that Owen Sound’s travel difference is a 100% increase (820km instead of 1570km).

In my setup SSM travel is less adversely affected – an increase of 20% over Fishfan suggestion and ONLY an 8% increase from their travel from last year’s division.

However, it is fair to say that we as a group (special thanks to fishfan) have come up with some pretty good divisions for the OHL to contemplate, but we don’t get paid to make those decisions – so I’m going to submit both ideas for Divisions C and D along with our Divisions A and B.

It will be interesting to look back at this thread and see if David Branch considered any of our suggestions when or if the realign the OHL in 2017. We can only lead a horse to water…
