However, the tie (single point) cannot be removed from hockey, unless they are willing to continue the game in the same way it was played in the previous 60 minutes. There are two major sports that end with only a winner and loser correctly – and that is because the game continues in the exactly same way it was played before the tie – Basketball and Baseball. If that system was put in place, then it would be fair to eliminate the tie. It’s make no sense to take a point away from a team for losing a 5 minute 3 on 3 entertainment designed format, after playing 60 minute of traditional hockey to a tie. If hockey is prepared to employ a playoff style overtime during the regular season, then NO single point in overtime makes sense! Obviously, hockey rules committee acknowledge the flaw in their overtime format – and it's drastic difference to the game played to tie – that they allow teams to retain the point they earned in regulation time (or regular hockey). If not, it would make the current overtime format an even greater farce. |

I still like the old 2 points for a win, 1 for a tie, 0 for a loss format. The shoot-out and 3 on 3 have no magic for me. There are enough other established tie breakers to determine standings without resorting to a different type of game; and at the end if two teams are deadlocked in the standings in every single category, then play one game head to head to break the tie.

Junior B has two overtime periods of five minutes four on four than three on three no shootout if it ends in a tie then one point each I hate the shoot out.
