Top 3 reasons to keep Tomasino until the 2021 trade deadline:

1. IceDogs will want to remain competitive in the first year of the rebuild, while the new faces adjust to the OHL.

2. Tomasino has star power and can be used to promote and sell as the face of the franchise to the casual fan.

3. Most importantly, in one and a half years, Tomasino is going to be an even better player than he is going to be in half a year. The IceDogs could be holding the most coveted trade chip: A 1st round NHL Drafted player, staring at the 2021 World Juniors, playing in a league that is hosting the Memorial Cup. His value, next year 2021, not this year 2020, will be sky high!!!

To play devils advocate ...

There is no guarantee that he returns to the OHL for the 2021 season ..... odds are he does but one never knows ....

I don't have the answer to this question, but other than Robert Thomas, what other players, in similar situations (OHL or NHL only) made their NHL team and were not returned to their OHL team?

Just of the top of my head, Robert Thomas is the only one I can think of, but London management were told of the high likelihood of him not returning to the OHL, so London didn't take a chance a traded him.

I agree with your first two points but not point 3. Tomasino will fetch way more if they trade him in January, when he has 1.5 years left as opposed to trading him in January 2021, when he only has half a year left. 18 year olds have a high price. That is why Chris Paquette was traded during our last rebuild and brought in a boatload of draft picks.

We need both young players and draft picks. By trading Tomasino this season, the Icedogs will be able to get both. In addition to Enright, the Icedogs should be able to acquire a pair of 1st round picked players if they trade Thomas and Tomasino which will give us three 1st round 16 year olds to kick start our rebuild. As well hopefully they can acquire a pair or more of second round picks for next year’s draft which will give us a good crop of 1st and 2nd round players to anchor the rebuild.

This is of course contingent on the Icedogs finding a team with enough assets to pay for Tomasino this season.

I like your plan - and personally I’m good with whatever the IceDogs do this year with Tomasino this year.

But I still believe that finding a team willing to move an 03 prospect next year will be easier when several OHL teams will be looking to add that “one” player that can put them over the top - and get them the extra spot in the Memorial Cup. Tomasino is not that player this year - so getting that 03 to go along with the one they get for Thomas in the same year - in market not as motivated as a Mem-Cup year might be tough task for JB.

IceDogs will be back sooner than most think. Just Rebuild slowly and patiently, maximize your assets, don’t panic and do this rebuild properly JB.
