Default IceDogs Penalty Kill

Looks like this topic requires it's own thread...

OHL referees call a few unnecessary or phantom penalties every game – so it’s inevitable that at some point a team will need to kill penalties.
The IceDogs’ PK is struggling at the moment, but unlike the PP (which requires high skill players), the PK does not and thus is a much easier fix.

Any player can be a really good penalty killer, just need the right mind set – out work the other team:

<> Pressure the PP unit in their d-zone (whenever possible)
<> Deny them easy entry into the d-zone
<> Skate hard to take away passing lanes or high-percentage shooting lanes.
<> Move bodies from in front of the net (with apparently a legal PK cross-check)
<> Sacrifice your body and block shots.

The bigger the game, the more important it becomes. The IceDogs will get this fixed sooner rather than later.

Ok so what's wrong with the PK. Let's hear from the experts. Guys like me know it's not firing on all cylinders but I don't have the expertise to say why, or what to do to make it better.

Anyone?

Start with the obvious things clear pucks better block shots get saves with better rebound control and if you are going to pressure you better get the puck or hustle back into position

I will answer as an "anyone" . My analysis over the last few games is too heavy a reliance on a passive box formation. Niagara forms a rigid box and hopes to keep traffic outside while giving Dhillon a clear view. Niagara seldom gets puck possession and is reactionary blocking shots and hoping to clear rebounds.

Speed is Niagara's weapon not passivity. They need to form a triangle and have the extra forward press the puck carrier in an aggressive manner and break up any play before it happens. The pressing forward can swap with the secondary forward as the play changes east and west. In so doing, the IceDogs take the game to the opponent rather than waiting for the inevitable goal.

The “passive box formation” is precisely what needs to be fixed.

The IceDosg allow teams to setup their PPs and tee off on Dhillon too easily. The problem is compounded when the players are not skating hard to close off passing and the high percentage shooting lanes . Add the reluctance to block shots – and that is a recipe for failure.

This x 1000. This is junior hockey. Time is the enemy for most junior players. Force the player with the puck and they'll cough it up more times than not. When Niagara has success on the PP it's because the other team sets up a box and the Dogs slowly move the puck around. When they're forced, they cough it up all the time and the crowd grows restless.

The teams strength is it's speed. USE IT! Use that as an example for the PK. Force the player with the puck and watch them cough it up.
