I know it’s early but I think this team can play against anyone in this league................or they can play like 💩 as they did on Thursday.

Winning the 3rd game of a 3 game weekend is not easy! It is even more difficult, if the team you are playing had the previous six days off to rest. So when the Ice Dogs fell behind 2 - 0 early in the second, not sure how many Ice Dogs fans saw this coming…

Another character road win!

The Ice Dogs are back on the road again Friday. Guelph will be their 3rd of 4 consecutive road games (Saturday @ Erie). The Dogs have won 3 of their 4 games on the road this year.

The game is being played at the Sleeman Centre . From notorious beginnings to a legendary resurrection comes a selection of notoriously good beer - for those of you making the trip up to Guelph for the 7:30 puck drop .

Guelph may very well be the Ice Dogs toughest test to date. The Storm are loaded with NHL drafted talent – and future NHL talent.

F 99 Isaac Ratcliffe PHI (2017) Rd: 2 (#35)
F 98 Givani Smith DET (2016) Rd: 2 (#46
F 99 Nate Schnarr ARI (2017) Rd: 3 (#75)
D 99 Dmitri Samorukov EDM (2017) Rd: 3 (#84)
F 99 Liam Hawel DAL (2017) Rd: 4 (#101)
F 99 Alexey Toropchenko STL (2017) Rd: 4 (#113)
D 97 Mark Shoemaker SJ (2016) Rd: 6 (#180)

In addition, the Storm have projected NHL 1st Rd pick D Ryan Merkley (00), two “C” rated NHL prospects D Owen Lalonde (00) and Cam Hillis (00) and two high 2017 OHL Priority Selections, with solid NHL bloodlines - Tag Bertuzzi (01 Rd.1 #2) and Mason Primeau (01 Rd.2 #22) in their line-up.

A quick look at Guelph’s talent and ages – and the Storm are likely the team we’ll have to beat in the OHL finals next year!

NIAGARA
The Ice Dogs are currently in 2nd place in the Central Division with 10 points (5W – 2L) - only a single point behind the Barrie Colts, but with a game in hand.

McDavid’s 2020 winger, Kirill Makisimov returns to the line-up after a budding bro-mance with Zach Shankar up in the press box. Shankar will not have to police Maksimov double-dipping the nachos this Friday. However, Zach is back on Saturday vs Erie!

Offensively, the Ice Dogs are being led by Akil Thomas (10 pts), who has registered at least a point in each of the Ice Dogs last 6 games. Las Vegas Golden Knights prospect Ben Jones has a team high 5 goals.

Stephen Dhillon (Really, no ELC yet?) finished weekend action as the OHL leader in wins with 5. Ben Jones is tied for the league lead in PP goals with 4. Akil Thomas is tied for the league lead in PP assists with 5.

With Makisimov back on Friday and Shankar returning Saturday, it will be interesting to see who the coach puts in - and takes out of the line-up this weekend.

In the post-game interview, Billy Burke was very blunt and honest when he explained – the Ice Dogs have 8 OHL caliber defenseman on the roster – it’s going to be a defense-by-committee approach and some veteran defenseman should expect to sit some nights.

STORM WATCH
Guelph will visit Flint on Wednesday, October 11th, 7:00pm game. So as of October 8th…
<> Guelph has 3 wins, 2 losses and a shootout loss on the season
<> Offensively, they are led by projected NHL 1st rounder Ryan Merkley with 9 pts
<> Russian Import Alexey Toropchenko is team leader with 4 goals.
<> OA F James McEwan was returned to the Storm last week after an extended stay at the Montreal Canadiens/Laval Rocket training camps - and has contributed a goal and assist in his first 2 games.
<> Nate Schnarr is returning from off-season shoulder surgery and has 2 goals in 2 games.
<> F Givani Smith is expected to skate this week after suffering a high ankle sprain at Detroit’s camp. He has not yet suited up for the Storm in any of their first 6 games.

Go Dogs!

This is why I like getting points early: you might remember, years ago, the Toronto Maple Leafs started a season 10-0-0(20 points). What was really great about that start was that it put the Leafs in 1st place clear until December. It's been said that the Leafs basically played .500 hockey for the rest of the year, and the Leafs were able to 'coast' to a 98-point season. No-one was able to catch them all year - they had 20 points before anyone else had 10.
Point being, a team can ride a good start straight through to a playoff spot. And this IceDogs team could really put some pucks in the net
