Niagara IceDogs 2021-22 (Week 04)

After last week's meatloaf performance (two outta three ain't bad), the IceDogs climbed to 6th place in the East with a 0.571 average and eight points. On Friday, Round three of the K9 Challenge Cup takes Niagara down the QEW to face Hamilton who have so far been the top Dogs. Then its back at home Saturday night to play Peterborough.

A LOOK BACK TO WEEK 3…

SPOTLIGHT ON…Danil Gushchin
Gushchin exploded for 5 goals, this weekend. He’s now 4th in the OHL Goal Scoring race with 6…SSM Kartye 8, OTT Beck 8 and BAR Olausson 7, ahead of Gushchin.

Week 3 ABSENTEES: Week to week (01 Howard, 02 Snow and 03 Agostenilli); 01 Cook and 02 DeSimone healthy scratches.

Last weekend, the IceDogs (4-3-0) dressed only 1-OA and 10-11 (04/05) rookies for each of the “3 in 3” and came away with 4 of 6 points. The only two points the IceDogs didn’t collect was in 52 shot loss in Oshawa. An impressive weekend!

By design and/or injury, if the IceDogs continue to play only 1 OA and 10-11 (04/05) rookies and still manage to play .500 hockey over an extended period of time, that would be a huge developmental success and hint to a bright future.

“It was a good game,” Burke said. “We played well and had over 50 shots. You can’t be upset. We outshot them 2-1. I’m proud of these guys, they worked hard, worked together. They had a lot of Grade A chances and maybe didn’t quite get the bounces, but at lot of positives to build on for sure.”

“We were super-gassed, honestly. We hadn’t had a three-in-three for 18 months,” Peters said. “We’re just having fun with it. We wanted two (wins) out of the weekend and we did so.

BLACKSOX OUTLOOK: A rebuild awaits the Petes, but that has been put on hold with the two outstanding OA additions of E.Sproule and J.Carroll. The Petes’ season will be similar to Niagara's previous season – a very competitive team until the trade deadline.

OHLPROSPECT (Brock Otten) OUTLOOK: Honestly, the Petes should not be a bad team. JR Avon could have a big season fresh off signing an ELC with Philadelphia and Tucker Robertson could be a breakout star. They also have Nick Lardis and Sam Alfano ready for bigger roles. But their defense is only average and their goaltending is a bit of a question mark. Petes have been due for a bit of a rebuild, they could likely deal McTavish for a massive haul that could really set this team up well for the future.

My wife commented on Saturday how bizarre it is going to games without the boneheads in attendance ?. She fears the time space continuum may have been significantly altered! Hopefully they are back in the same seats next season!

Or they can join us in this century and use electronic tickets. Heck, Kitchener sells 50/50 tickets electronically that you don’t even have to be at the game to buy/win. You can buy them online and watch the game from home. Or buy them at the game and they print them right then and there.

I was thinking the exact same thing. That would require an investment in technology though.

I think if Sarnia can afford to do it, Niagara should have no problem.

That was one of the worst games I’ve seen the IceDogs play this year. Feet weren’t moving. Sticks were swinging. Stupid selfish penalties! Hamilton looked more fresh than Niagara and Hamilton played in Peterborough last night. I kept expecting the boys to come out after each intermission with more energy but it never happened. What does Burke do in the dressing room between periods? That was disgusting!

Enright coughed up the puck 5 times tonight then took a bonehead penalty late in the third period in a tie game..
